Bihar liquor prohibition law: After changes in the prohibition law, the authorities can now release vehicles transporting liquor after payment of either 10% of the insured value of the vehicle or Rs 5 lakh after consulting the judicial authorities.

This is not the first time a hooch tragedy took place in Bihar where the liquor ban is in place. In fact, the Nitish government is always being criticized for the poor implementation of the law.
A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar was told by senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for Bihar, said that amendments have been made on April 1.
The Nitish Kumar government decided to amend the prohibition law amid allegations of ineffective implementation of the legislation and hooch tragedies in Bihar.
The Bihar government is facing criticism of ill-planned implementation of its liquor ban. Even Chief Justice of India NV Ramana criticised the Nitish Kumar government for implementing the same without considering a ground study and its aftermath.
Three liquor tragedies happened in January this year in which 37 people died and over 50 lost their eyesight.
Nitish Kumar pointed out that the decision was taken after an all-party meeting. Hence, those who are pointing fingers at the decision should also remind themselves of that meeting.
"It's been five years since the law banning alcohol in Bihar has been passed but still has not been implemented in the state properly," Chirag Paswan said.
A sub-inspector rank officer threatened a man and his father of framing them in a liquor smuggling case.
More than 1.5 lakh persons have been arrested for violating the liquor prohibition in Bihar till date since it was imposed on April 5, 2016.
