The Indian women’s hockey team scripted history at the Asian Games 2026. Taking on China in the gold medal match, the side registered a 1-0 victory in the clash to win the gold medal. It is worth noting that the Indian women’s hockey team won the gold medal at the Asian Games after a hiatus of 44 years as India added yet another gold to their ranks.

The side last managed to win the gold at the very first edition of the event back in 1982, when the games were held in Delhi. It is also interesting to note that with the gold medal victory, the Indian women’s hockey team has secured their quota for the LA28 Olympics as well, and after becoming Asia’s best side, the side will strive to become the world’s best next.

In the last edition of the Asian Games, the Indian women’s side failed to reach the Paris Olympics 2024 after they lost to China in the semi-final. Coming full circle, the side’s redemption arc has been completed as they defeat the very opponents that knocked them out last time around.

Notably, India’s Lalremsiami Hmarzot scored the sole goal of the clash. The goal came in the first quarter of the game, and then it was down to the side’s incredible defence throughout the game that helped India secure the medal as the side kept out China’s attack for the rest of the three quarters.

India’s gold medal tally rises to 16

With the hockey gold secured, the Indian contingent’s gold medal tally at the Asian Games has risen to 16 golds. The historic gold in women’s hockey brought India’s 76th medal at the Asian Games 2026. Throughout the day, India has been incredibly successful.

The day began with the women’s team winning the gold at the recurve arch event. Furthermore, Lovlina Borgohain and Parveen Hooda brought home boxing golds in the women’s 75 and 65 kg categories, respectively. Additionally, Ankush Panghal won the gold in the men’s 80 kg boxing final as well.

This was topped off with Sujeet Kalkal winning the gold in freestyle wrestling, as well as the Indian contingent continuing to perform at the highest level on the 13th day of the Asian Games.
