Paris Olympics 2024: India fell below Pakistan in the Olympics medal tally for the first time after 32 years when Arshad Nadeem clinched Gold at the ongoing Paris Olympics. Arshad won the gold in the men's Javelin throw final, where India's Neeraj Chopra secured a Silver medal. The ace Indian Javelin finished second with a throw of 89.45m, while Arshad won the gold with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m.

The medal was India's second of the day after the hockey team bagged a bronze following their win over Spain in the third-place finish game. This took India's medal tally to five - one silver, four bronze medals. But India has fallen below Pakistan in the medal tally even after this.

Why Pakistan is ahead of India in medal tally

Currently, Pakistan is in 53rd place, while India is in 64th place in the medal tally at the Paris Games. Countries are ranked in the medal tally based on their collection of the higher-valued medals at the Summer Games. This means if a country has only one gold, while the other one has five bronze, the former will be ranked higher than the latter in the tally. Due to the same reason, Pakistan is ranked higher than India despite the latter clinching five medals.

Neeraj had won the gold three years ago in Tokyo when his Pakistan counterpart had finished fifth but this time Arshad clinched the gold with an Olympic record and monstrous throw of 92.97m. However, Neeraj's silver was the fifth medal for India at the ongoing Games.

The Indian hockey team had clinched a bronze earlier on the same day after they defeated Spain 2-1 in the medal match. This was India's second consecutive hockey medal at the Olympics, making it the first occasion after 52 years when India has won back-to-back hockey medals.
