India vs West Indies 1st ODI Highlights: India beat West Indies by six wickets, take 1-0 lead in series

India beat West Indies by six wickets

Chasing a below-par target of 177, India captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma scored a fifty to ensure that the host gets a solid start while Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda chipped in with the bat to help India take a 1-0 lead in the series with a six-wicket win in 1st ODI here at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahemdabad.

India 151/4 in 22 overs Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda are taking India home with a small but important partnership for the 5th wicket. 150 up for India with a required rate of less than 1. India are on the verge of taking 1-0 lead in the series.

India 116/4 in 17.3 overs Unfortunate dismissal as Suryakumar's straight drive hits Alzarri Joseph's boot and crashes into the non-striker ends stump, Pant finds himself out of the crease. India lose two quick wickets and Deepak Hooda, who is making his debut, is at the crease.

India 115/3 in 16.4 overs Another one bites the dust as Ishan Kishan goes for a sweep shot but ends up giving a simple catch to Fabian Allen at fine leg. Akeal Hosein claims his first wicket of the match. India lose 3rd wicket. Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav are out in the middle.

India 93/2 in 13.5 overs A short and unusual innings from former India captain Virat Kohli comes to an end as Alzarri Joseph picks his second wicket in the over. The plan was to bowl short balls against Kohli, the Indian talisman was playing shots on every bowl and he falls into the trap. India lose two quick wickets.

India 84/1 in 13.1 overs After scoring 60 in 51 balls India captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Alzarri Joseph. The ball just nipped back in and hit Rohit on the pads. Rohit opted for a review after a short discussion with Kishan. However, the review show ball just clipping the bails. India retains the review but lose 1st wicket.

India 71/0 in 11.1 overs Sharma takes a quick double to reach his half-century in just 42 deliveries. A dominant figure in this unbeaten 71-run stand with Kishan, Rohit has so far slammed eight fours and a six as India strolls towards a win.

India 50/0 in 8.1 overs After seeing out the initial movement, the Indian openers have gone increasingly comfortable on the pitch as the last three overs saw them score 24 runs to take the side to 50 runs chasing 177.

India 26/0 in 5 overs New opening pair of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma gave India a steady start with 26 runs on the board in the five overs. Surprisingly, Kishan is taking his time to get settled down while Rohit is taking on West Indies pacers. Murli Karthik in the commentary box wants Akeal Hosein to roll his arm over in the powerplay.

So, India are chasing 177 in their 1000th ODI match to take a 1-0 lead in the series against West Indies. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan will be opening the innings for the hosts. Kemar Roach and Jason Holder are opening the attack for the visitors.

India bowl out West Indies for 176

Riding on brilliant bowling performances by Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal India bowled out West Indies for 176 in the first ODI of the three-match series here at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday. Chahal picked a four-wicket haul while Sundar claimed three key wickets. Prasidh Krishna, who was making his ODI debut also chipped in with two wickets while Mohammed Siraj also took one wicket. For West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder played a crucial knock of 57 runs. His partnership with Fabian Allen for the 8th wicket where the duo scored 78 runs took WI to a respectable total. Allen scored 29 runs. India are playing their 1000th ODI match and will look to chase down the target and take 1-0 lead in the series.

West Indies 167/9 in 40.4 overs Brave innings by Jason Holder finally comes to an end as Prasidh Krishna picks his second wicket of the match to remove him for 57. He gave West Indies the much-needed runs as before his innings the match was looking one-sided with Indian bowlers running through the visitors' batting order.

STAT ATTACK Jason Holder becomes the fifth Caribbean all-rounder to score 2000-plus runs and 100-plus wickets in ODIs. He joined the elite list with the greats in Sir Vivian Richards, Carl Hooper, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo

West Indies 157/8 in 38 overs OUT! Fabian Allen departs right after his partner Holder reached his half-century. The WI all-rounder won't be happy with the way he got out. Allen nudged a shorter delivery by Washington right back at him for a soft dismissal. That was Washington's third wicket of the day while bringing an end to a 78-run stand for the eighth wicket.

West Indies 129/7 in 33 overs Holder and Allen are showing the depth in Windies batting as the tailender duo has upped the ante with 33 runs in the last five overs. Rohit used as many as three bowlers during the period in Chahal, Siraj and Thakur but they have not really worried the batters, who have taken their stand beyond 50 runs already. It only, shows how terrible the visitors' top-order batters were earlier.

West Indies 96/7 in 28 overs Jason Holder and Fabian Allen are making an effort to put up some semblance of a total after the Windies top-order collapse triggered by Washington and Chahal.

West Indies 79/7 in 22.5 overs OUT! Wickets are falling thick and fast now and this time its tailender Akeal Hosein (0), who was taken behind the stumps by a diving Rishabh Pant. For Prasidh Krishna, that's first wicket of the day.

West Indies 78/6 in 21.4 overs OUT! Sixth wicket down as Chahal picks his third wicket in 2nd over. Another spot-on review by Rohit Sharma. Three in three for him. Shamarh Brooks departs after scoring 12 runs in 26 balls.

West Indies 71/5 in 19.4 overs OUT! Back to back wickets for Chahal as he removed Kieron Pollard for a duck. What a comeback from the leg spinner in the fifty-over format. Pollard failed to read the googly and gets cleaned bowled. Hat-trick chance for Chahal.

West Indies 71/4 in 19.3 overs OUT! Yuzvendra Chahal removes Nicholas Pooran for 18 in his very first over of the match. With this wicket, the leg spinner reached the milestone of 100 wickets in the ODI.

West Indies 55/3 in 15 overs West Indies are trying to get their innings back on track as Washington Sundar picked two wickets in the 12th over. Nicholas Pooran and Shamarh Brooks are at the crease while India are bowling spin from one end, Sundar, and pace, Shardul Thakur, from the other end.

West Indies 45/3 in 12 overs OUT! That's two wickets in an over by Washington, who had Bravo lbw with an overturned DRS call. Must say it was a fantastic review as the DRS and Hawkeye confirmed three reds. It was a flat and short delivery by Washington that kept straight and hit Bravo, who was playing for the turn, on the pads. Windies are now in deep trouble with two new batters in the middle in Nicholas Pooran and Shamarh Brooks.

West Indies 44/2 in 11.2 overs OUT! Washington Sundar picks the second wicket for India through a soft dismissal of Brandon King, who chipped a shorter length delivery to Suryakumar Yadav at mid-wicket. Good catch by SKY, driving to his right.

West Indies 28/1 in 7 overs Brandon King and birthday boy Darren Bravo look to rebuild Windies innings with Siraj and Prasidh Krishna coming hard at them. Rohit has now decided to bring the first change in the bowling in spinner Washington Sundar.

West Indies 13/1 in 2.4 overs OUT! Siraj hands first blow to the visitors in Shai Hope, who was played down as he attempted to drive. After conceding two boundaries in the over, Siraj bowled it full with a hint of an outswinger that Hope tried to drive away from the body but inside-edged it into the stumps. Darren Bravo si the new man in at No.3.

West Indies 0/0 in 1 over Siraj starts his spell with a maiden. It was an impressive over from the right-handed pacer, who was probing Hope with early movement with as many as four outswingers in the over.

1:30 PM Shai Hope takes strike with Brandon King at the other end against Mohammed Siraj with the new ball. However before the match begins, West Indies players take their knees for the Black Lives Matter movement.

1:25 PM Both the teams have lined up for the customary national anthems and Indian players could be spotted wearing the black armband as a tribute to the demise of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who breathed her last this morning in Mumbai.

1:20 PM We are just 10 minutes away from the match to begin. In a bit of a stat attack, this is the 134th time the two teams are squaring off in the format, with India winning 63 of them and the visitors 64. The rest of the games ended in no result.

1:10 PM Experts predict the pitch to be a good wicket to bat on as it is well greased while the grass is removed; a few dry areas could also be spotted on it. And if the dew comes into play later in the evening, the wicket will turn easier to bat on. As far as the outfield is concerned, it looks lush green.

1:05 PM Here are the playing XI for today's game

India Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj

1:02 PM Rohit has also handed Deepak Hooda his first ODI cap, he'll be making his ODI debut for India. For West Indies, Kemar Roach, Fabian Allen, and Darren Bravo are included in the playing XI after West Indies' series win against England at home last week.

1:00 PM Rohit Sharma wins the toss and opts to field first in India's historic 1000th ODI. The skipper says he doesn't expect the pitch to change much through the course of the game and in fact expects it to get better to bat under the light, hence the decision to field first.

Here's what Rohit said after winning the toss: "We will bowl first. Looks like a good pitch, won't change a lot. Will get better to bat under the lights. I am happy to be back, playing for India, good to be back on the field. It's been a couple of months since I played cricket.  It's a historic day in Indian cricket, been a long journey for India. We have seen a lot of ups and downs. As a team we have grown over the years, and we'll continue to do that. We had a few positives Covid cases, so we have some new faces."

12:55 PM Hello and welcome to the live coverage of IND vs WI 1st ODI from Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The venue will host all the remaining matches of the 50-series as well. Coming to today's game, we are just five minutes away from the toss as a COVID-19-hit India have makeshift arrangements in their team for the game. Rohit Sharma is soon to be out for the toss with his Windies counterpart Kieron Pollard.

Rohit Sharma's presence as the new leader, with a fresh template to arrest the familiar 'middle-order muddle', is exactly what the Indian team needs while ushering in a new era, which will begin with the ODI series against the West Indies, beginning here on Sunday.

After a rude reality check against a weak South African side in the away series, India are now back in familiar settings with a new ODI captain in Rohit, who will team up with illustrious Rahul Dravid and strive to get India back to winning ways.
