Highlights, India vs Australia, 2nd ODI: Kohli-Dhoni show helps India level series 1-1 in Adelaide

After losing the first ODI in Sydney, India bounced back in Adelaide to level the three-match series 1-1 with one match spare to play.

India TV Sports Desk Written by: India TV Sports Desk New Delhi Updated on: January 15, 2019 17:28 IST

Highlights India vs Australia, 2nd ODI:  India win by 6 wickets and what a match it was in Adelaide. Heart thumping and absolutely nerve wracking.  Kohli laid the foundation with his masterclass but it was Dhoni who finished the job in nostalgic style. A very important factor in the chase was the running between the wickets as the Indians ran the field ragged. MSD was a little cramped up in the end but finished stuff with a trademark six that shows the fighting spirit of the man. For the Aussies, no bowler made a great show but none was very poor either. Just a good game of cricket in the end and India just about played better than Australia to level the series 1-1. (Scorecard) (Click here to read live updates in Hindi)

Highlights India vs Australia, 2nd ODI: India won the match by 6 wickets

16.48 IST:  INDIA WIN BY 6 WICKETS! Quietly does the job with a run. Nothing fancy.

16.44 IST: SIX! Dhoni smashes it for the maximum and completes his 69th fifty. India now need just 1 runs

16.41 IST: Brilliant running from Dhoni there! It is not easy out there in the middle and MS has run back for the third one, seeing the opportunity. A length ball on middle, Karthik moves across and laps it fine towards deep fine leg. Behrendorff comes around from square leg and dives, saving a run for his team. India need 8 runs from 7 balls

16.38 IST: DOUBLE! A fuller length ball outside off, Karthik drives this wide of deep cover and comes back for another easy two.

* Marcus Stoinis to bowl the 49th Over

16.34 IST: Fuller length ball on middle and leg, Karthik walks down and across before flicking it towards deep mid-wicket. The batsmen run the first one hard and Maxwell out there, misfields and allows for the second one to be completed easily. 9 runs off this over. India now need 16 off the last two.

* An important over coming here for Australia. This is the very stage when India pulled things back with the ball. Jason Behrendorff to bowl it.

* India need 25 runs in 18 balls

16.28 IST: FOUR! A slower short ball on middle and Karthik is ready for it. He stands tall and pulls it away in the gap wide of fine leg. Puts the pressure back on the bowler. IND 272/4

16.27 IST: DOUBLE! It was a low full toss from Stoinis and DK finds the gap. IND 268/4

* Marcus Stoinis returns to attack

India need 34 runs in 24 balls

16.20 IST: FOUR! Karthik pulls it in the gap for boundary and now the situation is tensed for both the team. IND 262/4 in 45.4 Overs

16.16 IST: SIX! Out of here! Dhoni has decided to press on the accelerator. Gives the charge to Lyon and receives the fuller length ball with open arms. Goes with the spin and dismisses it over mid-wicket for a maximum. That will help. IND 252/4 in 44.3 Overs

* Lyon returns to bowl his last over

Dinesh Karthik is the new batsman.

16.09 IST: OUT! Straight into the hands of Maxwell! Brilliant field positioning from Aaron Finch. It is the huge wicket of Virat Kohli. Is there a twist in the tale? A length ball on the pads, Kohli flicks it off the pads and times it superbly as he hits in the air. But to his dismay, it goes straight into the bucket-hands of Maxwell who is positioned there. Huge moment in the game. The 82-stand has been broken and India still require 57 off 38 balls. India 242/4 in 43.4 overs

* The players are having drinks. 61 needed off 42 balls. India would like to close in the gap quickly and avoid taking it deep. For Australia, they need wickets to build pressure.

16.01 IST: Wide! A slower ball bouncer from Siddle, but the radar is lost as it is sprayed wide outside off. Signalled wide by the umpire.

15.58 IST: HUNDRED FOR VIRAT KOHLI! His 39th in ODIs! A length ball on middle and leg is worked away towards mid-wicket and he picks up a couple. The helmet does not come off and the celebration is not a huge one. Knows he has a task at hand here. Wonderful innings so far though. So the SCG failure was indeed a one-off. IND 230/3 in 42.1 Overs

15.55 IST: In the air! Kohli tried to flick it but get the inside edge and ball fell short of the fielder. IND 226/3 in 41.3 Overs

15.52 IST: Wide! Another bouncer that goes too high over the head of the batsman. The umpire signals it as wide.

15.50 IST: Wide! A bumper on middle and this time it is too high over the head of the batsman. Signalled wide by the umpire.

15.49 IST: Falls just short! Dhoni was coming down the wicket and Siddle seeing it bangs this one in short. MS still goes ahead with the pull and gets a top edge that flies in the air. Behrendorff comes running in to take the catch but the ball falls just in front of him. A couple taken by the batsmen. IND 219/3 in 40.2 Overs

* Powerplay 3 signalled. A maximum of 5 fielders will be allowed outside the ring till the end of the match.

15.41 IST: BOUNCER! Stoinis bowls the short delivery to build some pressure on MS Dhoni. IND 216/3 in 39.5 Overs

* Jhye Richardson returns to the attack

15.39 IST: FOUR! Moves into the 90s! Short and wide outside off, Kohli jumps on the back foot and slams it over point for a cracking boundary. Still only 6 from the over, 90 needed off 72 balls. IND 209/3 in 38 Overs

15.38 IST: Appeal from Stoinis, but height was the issue and Kohli is safe. IND 205/3 in 37.5 Overs

15.31 IST: SIX! Lovely use of the feet this time from the Indian skipper! Lyon flights this one outside off and Kohli is on the move. He comes down the track and just lifts it over the bowler's head for a maximum. IND 198/3 in 36.1 Overs

15.28 IST: Dhoni finds the gap and ran hard for double to change the strike for the next over. IND 192/3 in 36 Overs

* Marcus Stoinis returns to the attack

15.24 IST: FOUR! Deft! Lyon bowls it flat and short outside off, skidding away, Kohli plays it late and just uses the pace of the bowler to guide it towards the third man fence. Runs have started to come thick and fast now. Change in tempo! IND 186/3 in 34.3 Overs

15.22 IST: SIX! High and handsome! Kohli putting on a show! Behrendorff serves a length ball on middle and the Indian skipper gives it the full whack of his bat. Makes fine connection and sends it packing over wide long on for a biggie. IND 179/3 in 34 Overs

15.20 IST: FOUR! Beats the desperate dive put in by Marcus Stoinis. Short in length and outside off, Kohli keeps his weight on the back foot and powers it through covers. Stoinis in the deep probably dives a bit too early and hence fails to stop the ball. A much-needed boundary for India. IND 173/3 in 33.3 Overs

15.16 IST: One run from the over after straight five dot balls. IND 166/3 in 33 Overs

15.11 IST: MS Dhoni arrives in the middle. He received plenty of criticism for his slow innings in the first ODI and now is the time to silence his critics.

15.10 IST: OUT! Maxwell removes Rayudu for 24. End of Rayudu's scratchy knock. Never really got going in this innings. A flighted ball on middle, he advances down the track and tries to heave it across the line. Fails to get the timing right and Stoinis at deep mid-wicket takes the skier safely. 139 needed off 116 balls. This match is nicely hanging in the balance.

15.09 IST: FIFTY! Virat Kohli scores his 49th ODI half-century. Flatter delivery, it's short and skidding away from the batsman, Kohli delays his shot a bit and runs it wide of short third man for a couple of runs. The skipper is once again showing great form in the run chase and India's hopes are heavily pinned on his responsible shoulders.

15.05 IST: Rayudu is really struggling for timing! This time tries to go downtown over mid off but fails to middle his shot. Skies up in the air and once again it lands safely in the deep. Two more added to the total.

15.03 IST: Tries to force the issue this time but once again timing is eluding him. A shortish ball on off, Rayudu advances down the track and hits it in the air over covers for two. 150 up for India. 148 needed off 124 balls.

14.58 IST: In no control. Short delivery on off, Rayudu pulls it in the air as the ball gets big on him. He strokes it in the air and luckily for him, the ball falls in no man's land at deep square leg. A single taken. Rayudu is looking scratchy.

14.46 IST: Hits the stumps, at the non-striker's end! Fuller and on middle, Kohli plays a cracking straight drive but it hits the stumps at the other end. Robbed off a few runs there, the Indian skipper.

14.52 IST: Fine stop by Handscomb! Full and on middle, Kohli rotates his wrists and flicks it through mid-wicket. It races through and Peter in the deep also sprints across to his left. Puts in a dive close to the rope and pulls it back. Saves two.

14.49 IST: Two wides! Spinning down the leg side, Rayudu fails to sweep and the keeper also fails to collect. They cross.

14.47 IST: Rayudu is living dangerously. Full and outside off, Rayudu slices his attempted drive past the point fielder for a couple. That wasn't too far from Maxwell.

14.44 IST: A miscued pull shot! Stoinis serves yet another short ball and Rayudu goes for the pull shot. Doesn't get in the right position and is lucky it goes over the infield at mid-wicket. Two runs taken and Stoinis has a smile on his face.

14.43 IST: Marcus Stoinis to Virat Kohli, Effort delivery! Stoinis digs in a short ball around off, Kohli bails out of his attempted pull shot at the last moment. Marcus smiles as he looks at the Indian skipper. These two will be seen in the same team during the Indian T20 League.

14.38 IST: Peter Siddle to Ambati Rayudu, EDGY FOUR! Siddle dishes out a length ball outside off, shaping away again, Rayudu tries driving through covers but it takes a fat outside edge and flies past Carey for a boundary at third man. IND 121/2 in 22.4 overs

*Siddle is back

14.35 IST: Marcus Stoinis to Ambati Rayudu, Bangs it in short around off, keeping his line just outside off, Ambati plays it down towards backward point. Playing too many dots.

14.28 IST: Marcus Stoinis to Ambati Rayudu, FOUR! Gentle hands! Stoinis puts it on a good length again, enough width on this occasion for Rayudu to play at it late. He just opens the face of his bat at the last moment and runs it wide of the keeper for a boundary. IND 108/2 in 20 overs

*Ambati Rayudu walks in at No. 4

14.20 IST: Marcus Stoinis to Rohit Sharma, OUT! This is a massive breakthrough for the Australians. The Hitman has been sent packing. And the wicket has come in good time too. Length ball on off, Rohit camps back and slogs across the line. Gets a top edge which sails over mid-wicket, only as far as Peter Handscomb though. He settles under it and takes the catch. Good thing for him he was wearing his sunglasses, otherwise, the sun was in his eyes. India 101/2 in 17.5 overs vs Australia (298/9) in Adelaide

*Marcus Stoinis is into the attack as Australia get desperate for wickets

14.16 IST: Nathan Lyon to Rohit Sharma, SIX! Rohit gives it the full swing of his arms and sends it a long way. Tossed up right in his arc, the opener plants his front foot forward and slogs it deep into the mid-wicket stands. A maximum! IND 96/1 in 16.5 overs

14.15 IST: After providing a good start, Dhawan departed but that hasn't halted India at all. Rohit is joined by hi skipper in the middle and the two are motoring along nicely. 40 run have been added between them, and if Finch can't come up with something soon, that number could soon rise to triple figures.

*Drinks are on the field.

14.10 IST: Peter Siddle to Rohit Sharma, Quite full on middle and leg, Sharma flicks it past the diving short mid-wicket fielder, towards long on and comes back for the second. Was placed in the gap well. Nicely done.

14.03 IST: Peter Siddle to Virat Kohli, FOUR! Shot! It was pitched up on middle, Virat gets on his front foot and hits a straight drive for a boundary. IND 78/1 in 13.5 overs

14.02 IST: Peter Siddle to Rohit Sharma, SIX! First six of the innings and it comes from the bat of Rohit Sharma. Short of a length and Rohit pulls it high and away over deep mid-wicket for a maximum. IND 73/1 in 13.2 overs

14.01 IST: Nathan Lyon to Rohit Sharma, Short and wide outside off, Rohit has room to free his arms, so he cuts it past short third man and takes a couple of runs.

13.42 IST: Jhye Richardson to Shikhar Dhawan, OUT! First strike for Australia and it's that of the dangerous Shikhar Dhawan. Fuller and in the line of the stumps, Dhawan looks to go big downtown but only skies it as some pace is taken off it. It goes towards mid-off where Khawaja settles under it and takes a safe catch. IND 47/1 in 7.4 overs

13.40 IST: Richardson to Shikhar Dhawan, FOUR! Takes the aerial route and gets the desired result. Length ball outside off, rising off the deck, Dhawan stands tall and lifts it over covers for a boundary. IND 47/0 in 7.3 overs

13.36 IST: Peter Siddle to Shikhar Dhawan, FOUR! It is short and Dhawan pulls it away through fine leg for a boundary. He is looking very good out in the middle. IND 40/0 in 6.5 overs

13.34 IST: Peter Siddle now on.

13.29 IST: Jhye Richardson to Shikhar Dhawan, FOUR! Just wide but that was hit too hard. Richardson angles it across, full and outside off, Dhawan throws everything behind it and slashes it to the right of point. Maxwell there dives to his right but can't reach it. A boundary results. IND 32/0 in 5.2 overs

13.26 IST: Jason Behrendorff to Shikhar Dhawan, FOUR! What a shot! Behrendorff overpitches and Dhawan makes most of it. It was full and outside off, Shikhar drives it brilliantly through covers for a boundary. IND 25/0 in 4.4 overs

13.24 IST: Jason Behrendorff to Shikhar Dhawan, FOUR! First bad ball by Behrendorff. Length ball on leg, Dhawan tries to flick but misses and the ball hits his thigh pads and goes wide of Carey for a boundary. The umpire also signals it as a leg bye. IND 19/0 in 4.1 overs

12.24 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Glenn Maxwell, OUT! Easy catch taken by Karthik at long off. This is good bowling from Bhuvneshwar. Bowls it wide outside off on a length and Maxwell once again reaches out for it and hits in the air towards long off. He was off balance and does not get enough power to clear the fielder. DK in fact had to come in a little to pouch that. A quick-fire knock from Glenn comes to an end, two shy of his half-century. A good wicket for India though. Australia 283/6 in 47.3 overs vs India in Adelaide

12.18 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Glenn Maxwell, FOUR! Maxwell finally gets it right. Siraj bowls a full toss on middle and Maxwell hits it towards mid-wicket for a boundary. AUS 280/6 in 46.4 overs

12.13 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Shaun Marsh, SIX! Marsh is really turning on the heat here! A length ball outside off and it disappears into the deep mid-wicket stand as SOS stands and picks the bones out of that one. Huge! This is turning into an epic knock. AUS 270/5 in 45.5 overs

12.12 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Glenn Maxwell, That would be frustrating for the bowler. A poor fielding effort in the deep allows for the second run. A slower one outside off hit in the air towards deep cover by Maxwell. It was straight to the fielder and there should have been no way two could be taken there.

12.10 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Glenn Maxwell, Wide! A tough call. Looked to be inside the line as Bhuvneshwar tried for a slower ball outside off. Maxwell lets it go and the ball is called a wide by the umpire. A grimace from the bowler.

11.45 IST: That's the hundred for Marsh! What a brilliant knock it has been! He has looked really good from the moment he walked in. Played his shots with freedom and ensured Australia have a real good launchpad now for the final onslaught. Glenn goes for a pull over mid-wicket but the extra bounce causes it to take the top edge on this occasion. Luckily for the Aussie all-rounder though, the ball flies above the head of Dhoni for a boundary. The 200 comes up for the hosts with that shot. AUS 201/5 in 38.3 overs

11.32 IST: Ravindra Jadeja to Shaun Marsh, FOUR! Tossed up on off, Marsh goes down on one knee and lofts it over mid-wicket for a boundary. Good batting by Shaun here. Waiting for the bad deliveries and punishing them. AUS 195/5 in 37.5 overs. Marsh into the nineties!

11.24 IST: Shami to Stoinis, FOUR! Too short and Stoinis was in position very early as he lifts this pull over the mid-wicket fielder for a boundary. 50-run stand comes up with that, does it mean another wicket is coming too? AUS 185/4 in 36.2 overs

11.20 IST: Ravindra Jadeja to Shaun Marsh, FOUR! The timing and placement on that one was excellent. It was slighly short outside off, Marsh rocked onto his back foot and hit it towards the vacant backward point region for a boundary. Marsh is looking very comfortable against the spinners. AUS 177/4 in 35.2 overs

11.14 IST: Kuldeep Yadav to Shaun Marsh, FOUR! Tossed up on middle, Marsh comes down the track and hits it straight down the ground for a boundary. He moves on to 75 runs. His use of feet against the spinners today has been excellent. AUS 165/4 in 33.5 overs

10.55 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Marcus Stoinis, Beauty! That is the length that Siraj would want to hit more often. Bowls on a good length just outside off and it shapes away slightly after landing. Beats the outside edge of Stoinis as he tries to push this back down the ground.

*Marcus Stoinis walks into the middle next.

10.47 IST: Ravindra Jadeja to Peter Handscomb, OUT! And yes it is! An appeal for a stumping! Dhoni reckons he is out and Handscomb is seen walking. It is taken upstairs though. Looks like the back foot was on the line.

09.50 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Usman Khawaja, FOUR! The placement is very good on this one. On the shorter side of the length, on middle, Khawaja moves inside the line, positions himself for the pull and places it nicely through square leg. The fielder in the deep puts in a dive to his left but can't stop it. 11 runs off this over. AUS 57/2 in 14 overs

09.47 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Shaun Marsh, FOUR! This is a fast outfield, so the ball will race away. Siraj with a short ball but it doesn't bounce as much. Just sits up for Marsh who gets on top of the bounce and pulls it hard through mid-wicket for a boundary. The 50 comes up for Australia. AUS 52/2 in 13.3 overs

09.42 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Shaun Marsh, Beaten! A length ball outside off from over the wicket. Marsh looks to cut it but is beaten by the ball as it skids on.

*Kuldeep from the other end

09.31 IST: Mohammed Siraj to Usman Khawaja, FOUR! On the pads this time flicked away nonchalantly by Khawaja. Should get him going this boundary. No chance of stopping that once it beat the square leg fielder.

*Debutant Siraj to bowl next

09.29 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Usman Khawaja, Great work from Kohli! A length ball outside off and Usman gets a thick outside edge and it runs towards gully where Kohli dives to his left and stops the ball well. Saves a single but this kind of effort lifts the bowler as well as the team.

*Shaun Marsh is out next.

09.24 IST: Mohammed Shami to Alex Carey, OUT! GONE! Now Shami strikes and both the Australian openers are back in the pavilion. This is very good, banged in short and it's sharp. Takes Carey by surprise who is hurried into the pull. The ball goes off the top edge and balloons towards mid-wicket. Dhawan settles under it and takes a comfortable catch. Fantastic stuff here from the visitors, a good start for them in this encounter.

09.21 IST: FOUR! Shot. Look at the timing on that. So sweet from Alex Carey. It's quite full and hurled outside off, the opener just leans into it and caresses the drive through the covers for a boundary. AUS 26/1 in 7.3 overs

*Usman Khawaja walks in at number 3.

09.18 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Aaron Finch, OUT! Bowled 'em! Finch has been undone again and that is another failure for him. His bad form overall as well as at the Adelaide Oval continues. This one is hurled just outside off on a good length and moves into the right-handed batsman after landing. Finch who was defending and playing along the ground till now, looks to go over the top of mid off with a lofted shot but the ball takes the inside edge and goes on to knock the middle stump. If you remember the previous game too, he was bowled by Kumar with a similar ball coming in. Not a good shot from the skipper, especially when you are out of form. India strike early!

09.10 IST: Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Aaron Finch, Drops just short of Kumar on his followthrough. Looks like that one held a little on the pitch. Landed on off stump and Finch was ahead to push it back down the ground. It hits high on the bat and goes slightly in the air towards Bhuvneshwar but lands in front of him. Lucky for the skipper!

09.05 IST: Mohammed Shami to Alex Carey, Beaten! Beauty from Shami. On a length outside off and shaping away after landing. Carey wanted to defend on the front foot but is beaten on the outside.

09.00 ISTBhuvneshwar Kumar to Alex Carey, Wide! Bhuvneshwar hurls this down the leg side. It is signalled wide by the umpire.

08.56 ISTMohammed Shami to Aaron Finch, Play and a miss! Much better from Shami, bowls this on a length outside off and takes it slightly away. Finch looks for the expansive drive but is beaten on the outside.

08.55 IST: Mohammed Shami to Alex Carey,  FOUR! First four of the day and what a flick it was to get it too. A nothing ball on the pads, easy pickings for Carey who just holds his balance and flicks it through square leg for a boundary. AUS 7/0 in 1.2 overs

08.54 IST: Shami to bowl from the other end

08.50 ISTBhuvneshwar Kumar to Alex Carey, Starts off with one on the pads, Carey flicks it away to deep fine leg for a single. Australia are off the mark.

08.49 IST: We are all set for the start of play here. The players are on the field and taking their positions. Kumar will start against Carey

08.45 IST

Continues saying there are decent boundary sizes today with a smallest of 57 m. Reckons that the captain winning the toss will bat first and should look to score about 270-280.

08.27 IST: India skipper, Virat Kohli, says that they would have batted first as well, considering the conditions which are hot and humid. Hopes that the breeze will be there continuously. Reckons it's a great opportunity for them as they are under pressure to come back in the series. Adds that they have one change to their line-up with Mohammed Siraj replacing Khaleel Ahmed.

08.25 IST: Australia skipper, Aaron Finch, feels it is a good wicket and won't change much. Mentions that they don't want to change things too much from the previous game where they batted first and won. Informs that they do not have any changes in personnel.

08.00 IST: Hello and welcome to our live blog of the 2nd ODI between India vs Australia from Adelaide Oval.

Brief Preview: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's inability to set the pace during middle overs will remain a major cause of concern when India take on Australia in a do-or-die second ODI on Tuesday in their bid to keep the three-match series alive. Hardik Pandya's sudden suspension on disciplinary grounds has badly affected the balance of the batting order, which was apparent during team's 34-run defeat in the opening match despite vice-captain Rohit Sharma's 22nd hundred in the 50-over format.
