Justice Js Khehar Justice JS Khehar DOB: 28 August 1952

Justice JS Khehar was the 44th Chief Justice of India (CJI) from 4 January 2017 to 27 August 2017. He is the first Sikh CJI. From 13 September 2011 to 27 August 2017, he has been a judge in Supreme Court of India. He gave many landmark Judgements such the Right to Privacy Judgement and the Triple Talaq. In 2017, Justice Khehar was one of the judges of the bench that heard Triple Talaq case. He upheld the practice of validity of Triple Talaq. However, it was barred by the bench by 3:2 majority. Bench asked the Central government to bring legislation in six months to govern marriage and divorce in the Muslim community. The apex court ruled that there would be an injunction on husbands pronouncing triple talaq on their wives, till the government formulates a law regarding triple talaq. He was also a part of the bench which sent Subrata Roy (Sahara Chief) to jail. The matter relates to the refund of money invested by people in Roy’s two companies. He was succeeded by Justice Deepak Misra.
