The marriage announcement of tennis player Sania Mirza figured in Maharashtra Legislative Council on Thursday as Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe raised issue of increasing numbers of marriage cheating cases.
"Marriage cheating cases are increasing and in Sania s matter, there were reports about her fiancee being already married," Gorhe said, speaking on a debate on the law and order situation in the state. Later, speaking to media, Gorhe expressed displeasure over Sania s decision to marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
Stating difference in Indian and Pakistani marriage laws, Gorhe said "Indian laws are based on the Constitution and Pakistani laws are derived from Shariat."
Citing the example of Pakistani cricket player Imran Khan and his British wife Jemima who had filed divorce over staying in Pakistan, Gorhe said it is not clear in Sania s case where she would be staying. On Sania representing India after marriage, Gorhe said marriage is a personal choice.
Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi also expressed displeasure over Sania's impending marriage. PTI
