Government on Monday said that the political process in Sri Lanka has to be expedited to provide a lasting solution to the issue of the Tamil minorities in the country.

"Political process has to be expedited. That only will provide lasting solution," External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said in the Rajya Sabha answering clarifications sought by members to his statement.

The minister agreed with the members that what has been done for the Internally Displaced People (IDP) in the wake of the conflict in the island nation is not enough.

"But at the same time, we are dealing with a friendly country with whom we had cordial relations traditionally," Krishna said, underlining the importance of the neighbouring country for India's security.

He said 100,000 IDPs are still in camps and effort is to resettle them so that they can go back to their hamlets.

On the concern raised by members about security and plight of fishermen, Krishna said, "Security was of utmost concern to the government" and that a proposal has been made to the Sri Lankan government for an MoU for the safety of the fishermen.

Krishna said India is giving substantial assistance for the rehabilitation and reconstruction in Sri Lanka. PTI
