Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today announced construction of 10,000 flats in Chennai and other towns in the state at a cost of Rs.825 crore besides developing a satellite township at Kadambur near here.

“To fulfill Vision 2023 Plan and under the slum free cities plan of the Union and State governments, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, will build 10,000 flats in Chennai and other towns at a cost of Rs.825 crore during the first phase,” Jayalalithaa said in a suo motu statement in the Assembly.

While the Centre would share 50 per cent, the state would bear 40 per cent of the cost and beneficiaries would pitch in with 10 per cent in the construction expenditure alone.

She had ordered reconstruction of 534 TNSCB (Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board) tenements at Nochikuppam here at a cost of 48.06 Crore, she told the House.

“I am happy to announce that 222 acres of land in Kadambur village will be  developed into a self-supporting residential township with all infrastructure facilities.

The township has been planned considering the growing need for housing plots in areas around Maraimalai Nagar, she said.

The Chief Minister also announced a swanky new building to house the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority at Koyambedu here.

The new structure with three basement floors, a stilt floor and eight floors will also house other government offices. The cost of the building will be Rs.63.25 crore.

Pedestrian subways at seven locations, including Alandur here at a cost of Rs. 23 crore, a two floor office complex above the Velachery MRTS Station at cost of Rs.40 crore, were the other announcements the chief minister made.
