Chandigarh:  Congress leader and former Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh on Wednesday  filed his nomination as the party candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections to elect two members from the state.

Birender, currently co-chairman of Congress coordination committee for Haryana, filed two sets of nomination papers with the Returning Officer Sumit Kumar.

Singh was accompanied by Union Tourism Minister Selja, Union Minister of State and AICC general secretary Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, state Congress chief Phool Chand Mullana among others.

Singh's nomination for Rajya Sabha is a good step and the country would be benefitted from his experience, Hooda told reporters here.

Yesterday, INLD's Ranbir Singh Gangua had filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat from the state.

The two seats fell vacant due to completion of the term of Tarlochan Singh and resignation of Ajay Singh Chautala after he was elected from Dabwali in the last year's Assembly elections.

Wednesday was the last day for filing nominations. Scrutiny would take place on Thursday and the last day of withdrawal is July 3. The election to fill the two vacancies is scheduled on July 10.

In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, Congress has 45 members (including the Speaker), INLD 31, BJP four, BSP, SAD (INLD ally) and Haryana Janhit Congress-BL one each and Independents seven. P
