The Congress on Tuesday said the break-up between Samajwadi Party and Kalyan Singh was as "opportunistic" as their alliance.
"Do these people (Mulayam Singh and Kalyan Singh) join one another on the issue of any ideology?" AICC general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh asked.
He said, "their alliance was opportunistic and so is their break-up."
Singh was speaking to reporters after meeting AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi at his residence along with Firozabad MP Raj Babbar and West Lucknow MLA Shyam
Kishore Shukla, who were elected in the recent Lok Sabha and Assembly by-polls respectively in Uttar Pradesh.
Babbar, though declined to criticise Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh saying they are very senior to him, said, "some fire-balls give light while burning, others only burn and cause injury to others".
He, however, refused to specify who was affected by the break-up.
Asked if Rahul Gandhi was disappointed with the party's poor performance in Bundelkhand region in assembly by-polls, Digvijay Singh replied in the negative and expressed
the confidence that the ruling BSP will lose in the 2012 elections in the state.
"No, you understand it's the government and not the party, which fights all by-elections in Uttar Pradesh. When Mulayam Singh was the chief minister, they (Samajwadi
Party) won all the by-elections. But, in the general election, they lost very badly. This will happen to BSP in 2012 as well."
Rahul Gandhi had been raising the issue of development in Bundelkhand regularly and had even demanded constitution of a special authority for the region by meeting Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, which had led to a war of words between Congress and BSP.
However, Congress could not win any seat in the region in the by-polls. Asked about cases against Chief Minister Mayawati, Singh said, "one will reap what one sows."
About campaigns by a section of politicians in Maharashtra against North Indians, Babbar said, "this is unfortunate". It could be solved socially and not politically he said. PTI
