BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh on Monday appeared divided over possible re-induction of Kalyan Singh into the party fold, a day after the former Hindutva mascot indicated his desire to return to his parent organisation.

When contacted, the leaders said it was for the BJP High Command to decide on the matter, adding Kalyan Singh was not an ordinary man who could be re-admitted by anyone.

"It is not an issue to be decided at my level. I have only welcomed his regret on his act of betraying the party," senior BJP leader and MP Lalji Tandon said.

"Singh is not a common worker who can be re-inducted by anyone," he said.

"He (Kalyan) will have to win over the trust of the party leadership which will decide on his re-joining," said Tandon who had telephonic conversation with the former Chief Minister yesterday.

BJP UP chief Ramapati Ram Tripathi, however, said the regret expressed by Kalyan Singh appeared to be the outcome of political compulsions after he was dumped by the Samajwadi Party.

"Whatever he is saying is a realisation of his past mistakes which have left him politically isolated today," Tripathi said.

Former state unit head Kesari Nath Tripathi said Kalyan deserted the BJP at a crucial juncture -- just before the Lok Sabha elections -- and, therefore, this aspect should not be overlooked.

"If I have my way, he should not be taken back into the BJP fold," said the former state assembly Speaker.
