New Delhi: Congress today slammed leaders like Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Babulal Gaur and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for their “irresponsible” remarks on incidents of crime against women and asked them to “step down”.

Party spokesperson Shobha Oza also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over continuance of incidents of rapes and gangrapes in various parts of the country.

“The way the incidents of women persecution, rapes and gangrapes have increased in last few days and then the manner in which irresponsible statements have been made by some political leaders is very shameful. Be it remarks by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav or what the Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh Babulal Gaur said today.

“Be it Gaur or Akhilesh, if anybody gives such statements while occupying a position of responsibility, it is condemnable. What is the point in the continuance of such a Chief Minister or such a Home Minister then? They should step down from their posts and hand these over to people, who take responsibility,” Oza told reporters at the AICC briefing.

Recalling that in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election, a slogan was coined by BJP “Bahut Hua Naari Par Waar, Abki Baar Modi Sarkar”, she said that women believed that there will be at least a reduction in cases of women persecution when Modi government comes to power even if they do not come to an end.

She said that the government, which came to power making a big issue of women security, is “silent” as such incidents keep happening.
