SP, Congress fail to reach consensus over seats, end prospect of alliance

The much talked about alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Indian National Congress for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections seems to have doomed even before it properly saw the light of the day.

Failing to reach a consensus over allotment of seats, both the parties couldn’t agree to the number demanded by each other.

Heavy negotiations were on for the last few days till they hit a dead end today. The prospect of the alliance ended when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s final offer of 99 of 403 seats was rejected by the Congress, who was vouching for 110 seats.

All went well between the two parties till they commenced the seat sharing talks. Things went further haywire when SP released the list of 208 candidates that fielded nominees for seats represented by the Congress in the assembly.

The leaders of SP have maintained their stand that the Congress doesn't have the footprint strength to demand such numbers to begin with. On the other hand, Congress stressed that anything less than 120 seats would be against the party's interests.

As per Samajwadi Party sources, the alliance is not taking pace and Akhilesh Yadav will release his party’s manifesto tomorrow.
