Hitting out at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for lending support to JNU students accused of raising anti-national slogans last year, Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that had former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi been alive, no Congressman would have gone to the University.
Speaking at India TV mega conclave – Vande Mataram, the Finance Minister said, "At the point of time when slogans were being raised to disintegrate the country, Congress party visited the campus to lend support. Could one even imagine this had Indira Gandhi been alive."
Jaitley also slammed the Left parties for their support to JNU students who were accused of raising anti-national slogans in the campus.
The minister's comments were in reference to Rahul Gandhi's visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in New Delhi on February 13, 2016 at the height of the controversy after alleged anti-national were raised at an event. Gandhi's visit had come a day after the arrest of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case.
The alleged anti-national were raised at event marking the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on February 9, 2016.
