Fodder scam: Lalu Yadav, former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra get 5 years in jail in third case

Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is behind Lalu's conviction in fodder scam case.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to five years in jail in third fodder scam.

A special CBI court on Wednesday sentenced Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Yadav and former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra to five years in prison in third fodder scam case. 

Earlier in the day, Lalu, former Bihar chief minister Mishra were found guilty by a special CBI court in Ranchi in the Chaibasa treasury case. The case is related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 33.67 crore from Chaibasa treasury in 1992-1993.

Soon after the verdict, Lalu's son Tejashwi Yadav said "people of Bihar believe that Lalu ji is a hero". The former Bihar deputy chief minister even alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is behind Lalu's conviction in fodder scam case.

HERE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS:

01:52 pm: Both Lalu Yadav and Jagannath Mishra also fined Rs 5 lakhs each by Ranchi court.

01:50 pm: RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra sentenced to five years in prison in third fodder scam case by Ranchi court.

11:52 am: "Legal options are still open for us, will appeal in high court", says Lalu Yadav's son Tejashwi Yadav.

11:45 am: A special CBI court here today convicted Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad in the third fodder scam case. Out of the 56 accused in the case, six were acquitted. 

11:30 am: The former Bihar chief minister is currently lodged in Ranchi's Birsa Munda Jail after being convicted for 3.5 years on December 23, 2017. The case pertained to the Deoghar treasury.

11:28 am: The allegation is that Rs 33.67 crore was withdrawn on fake allotment letters. The actual sanction of amount was Rs 7.10 lakh.

11:22 am; The Chaibasa treasury is the third case in which Lalu Yadav and Jagannath Mishra are accused. 

11:15 am: Earlier this month, Lalu was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and fined Rs 10 lakh by a another CBI judge in a fodder scam case relating to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury 21 years ago. 

11:00 am: Lalu Yadav has already been convicted in two of the five cases of fodder scam.
