Indian players with most runs on Test captaincy debut, Shubman Gill goes past Sunil Gavaskar
Shubman Gill made a stellar captaincy debut as he slammed a century in the first innings of the first Test against England in Leeds. Gill hit 155 in both innings combined. Here is a list of Indian players with the most runs as captain on debut.
5 - Dilip Vengsarkar: Dilip Vengsarakar was one of the best Indian batters during his time. A World Cup winner with the Indian team in 1983, Vengsarkar has also led India in 10 Test matches. On his debut Test against West Indies in Delhi in 1987, he scored a century in the second innings. Vengasarkar made 10 and 107 runs on his debut Test as captain, totalling 112 in the match.

4 - Sunil Gavaskar: Inarguably one of the best batters in the history of the game, Sunil Gavaskar was a maverick during his playing days. Gavaskar led India in 47 Test matches from 1976 to 1985. On his captaincy debut, he slammed 116 and 35* against New Zealand in Auckland, totalling 155.

3 - Shubman Gill: Indian Test cricket has entered a new era after the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With Shubman Gill leading, India are on a tour to England for a five-match series. On his debut Test as captain, Gill scored 147 in the first innings of the first Test. He made 8 in the second innings for a total of 155 runs as skipper on his debut.

2 - Vijay Hazare: Vijay Hazare was best known for his twin centuries in the Test against Australia in Adelaide on the 1947-48 tour. He led India in 14 Tests and scored a hundred on his maiden Test as skipper. He made 164* against England in Delhi on his captaincy debut in 1951.

Known as one of the best batters of the modern era, Kohli infused a fearless aura in the team and played a huge role in re-developing the pace attack. On his debut as captain in Adelaide, Kohli slammed 115 and 141 against Australia in 2014, totalling 256 runs.
