A lot of players have led India in Tests, but not many have led the team for a long period. The likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Sourav Ganguly are a few of the players who led India in a lot of Test matches. But did they manage to score the most runs in an innings as captain for the country?
Shubman Gill is on top in this aspect, having recently plundered 269 runs in the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. He batted for a staggering 509 minutes and faced 387 deliveries during his marathon knock. Gill smashed 30 fours and three sixes during his stay in the middle as India posted a mammoth total of 587 runs in the first innings.

Virat Kohli is in the second position in the list of Indian players with most runs in an innings as captain in the longest format of the game. He scored an unbeaten 254 off 336 deliveries against South Africa at the MCA Stadium in Pune back in October 2019. Kohli smacked 33 fours and two sixes during his knock and played a crucial role in India winning the Test match.

Virat Kohli is yet again featuring in this list, having amassed 243 runs against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi in December 2017. He batted for a massive 447 minutes and scored runs at a strike rate of 84.66, facing 287 balls. He smacked 25 fours during his record knock. It was one of the most memorable innings of his captaincy career as Kohli was at his peak form with the bat then.

Kohli was a different beast as a captain during the 2016 to 2018 period irrespective of the format. In December 2016, he plundered England's bowling attack at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, smacking 235 runs off 340 balls with 25 fours and a six to his name. He was in the middle for a staggering 515 minutes and literally toyed with the England bowlers.

MS Dhoni played 90 Tests in his illustrious career and features in the fifth position on this list. He scored 224 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai against Australia in February 213. The Indian captain batted for 365 minutes and faced 265 deliveries while smashing 24 fours and a stunning six sixes.
