Omicron Variant Updates: New variant spreads five times faster, says Union Health Ministry

In the wake of the new coronavirus variant Omicron, Union Health Ministry said that passengers arriving from 'at risk' countries need to undergo RT-PCR test on arrival and if found positive for COVID-19, they will be treated under clinical management protocol. On Thursday, India reported its first 2 cases of Omicron variant after two people tested positive for the new variant in Karnataka. The new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529 was first detected in South Africa. WHO classified its as a 'variant of concern' and named it as 'Omicron.'

Omicron in India Latest News Updates: Two cases of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected in Karnataka, the Union government said on Thursday while asking people not to panic but follow Covid-appropriate behavior and get vaccinated without delay. About vaccine coverage, the official said that 84.3 percent of the adult population in India got the first dose while 49 percent got the second dose. Earlier, the US recorded its first confirmed case of the omicron variant on Wednesday- in a vaccinated traveler who returned to California after a trip to South Africa- as scientists around the world race to establish whether the new, mutant version of the coronavirus is more dangerous than previous ones. The infected person in the US was identified as a traveler who had returned from South Africa on November 22, developed mild symptoms, and tested positive for COVID on Monday. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco obtained a sample from the patient on Tuesday evening and worked feverishly overnight to assemble the genetic sequence.
