External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will address the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday evening. The General Debate opened on Tuesday and will run till Monday. Swaraj, who addressed the UNGA session last year as well, reached New York last Saturday and participated in several bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA including the SAARC and BRICS.

Earlier on Friday, speaking at the SAARC meeting, Swaraj emphasised to SAARC that an environment of peace and security in South Asia is essential for cooperation and economic development. She said the number of incidents endangering South Asia are on the rise and terrorism remains the single-largest threat to peace and stability in the geopolitical region, and the world.

The SAARC meet captured wider attention when Swaraj left the venue and did not wait for Pakistan's Foreign Minister Qureshi to present his statement. Qureshi slammed Swaraj's move stating that India is creating obstruction in regional cooperation.

During the BRICS meeting on Friday, Swaraj urged the members of the group to peak with a stronger voice and not be divided among themselves on the critical issue of achieving the long-pending UN Security Council reform.

Swaraj also urged that the BRICS nations must join hands to make United Nations' counter-terrorism mechanism efficient in listing terrorists and their outfits.
