PM Modi revamps his team with 43 new ministers, drops many heavyweights from 'young cabinet'

As many as 43 ministers took oath in a major cabinet expansion-cum-reshuffle while 12 ministers were dropped. The new-look Team Modi now has seven more women members taking the overall strength of female ministers to 11. IN PICS

Modi Cabinet Expansion: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday made big changes in his Council of Ministers. As many as 43 new ministers took oath of office at an event held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. The major revamp includes several new faces and elevation of many existing ministers. This cabinet rejig is the first since 2019 when the BJP-led NDA won a massive majority. Among the top new entrants were Narayan Rane, Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Pasupati Paras while Union Ministers Dr Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Babul Supriyo were among the ones who lost their place in the Modi Cabinet. The Cabinet reshuffle has come a few months ahead of crucial Assembly elections in states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab next year. IN PICS

    Cabinet expansion: 'Big shakeup' on the cards

    The reshuffles undertaken by Modi so far, all in his first term, have also seen some ministers being dropped or removed from key portfolios on account of their performance. The PM has also sprung surprises in the past by inducting those with apolitical background, like S Jaishankar and Hardeep Singh Puri, as ministers. A party source said it is likely to be a "big shakeup" and members of the party organisation may be brought in the government. Names of Bhupender Yadav, Anil Baluni, Sudhanshu Trivedi are doing the rounds while BJP MPs Sushil Modi, Ashwini Vaishnav and G V L Narasimha Rao are also being mentioned as probables.
