Maharashtra approves proposal to up contingency fund to Rs 2500-crore

Mumbai: To provide relief to farmers suffering crop losses due to hailstorm, the Maharashtra government yesterday approved a proposal to hike the limit of contingency fund to Rs 2,500 crore from Rs 1,000 crore.  


Officials said the fixed limit of contingency fund is Rs 150 crore. But the limit was increased to Rs 1,000 crore through an ordinance on April 5 this year.

In yesterday's cabinet meeting, the ordinance was amended and the limit was increased up to Rs 2,500 crore.

The fresh ordinance would be promulgated after the Governor's approval.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan also took stock of the possibility of poor monsoon predicted by IMD.

Chavan told reporters that he had instructed ministers, district administration to prepare action plan for improving source of water generation, ensure proper consumption and stop wastage.

“I have also asked district collectors to look into the fodder for cattle where water is supplied through tankers,” he added.

Sources said the issue of proposed fee hike of 25 per cent for all courses by University of Mumbai was raised by Textile Minister Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan and supported by all ministers from Mumbai.
