New Delhi: Mawlynnong village has been declared by Discovery magazine as the cleanest village in Asia in 2003.

The village has also won the acclaim of being the cleanest village in India in 2005. The village is also referred to as ‘God's own garden' due to its cleanliness.

It is located around 90 kms from Shillong in the East Khasi hills, along the Indo- Bangladesh border.

The village is picturesque and its scenic beauty is dazzling.  The lush green village looks even more spectacular during monsoon.

The adage "Neighbours envy, owners pride' is apt for Mawlynnong as it has earned the distinction of being one of the cleanest villages in Asia and all the villagers must be proud of.

Also, the cleanliness of the village is the sole responsibility of every villager.

The locals keep the surroundings clean, roads clean, throw garbage in the dustbin.

Bamboo garbage bins are placed at every nook and corner of the village which seems to explain the cleanliness conscious locals of the village.

There are 82 households in the village.  The literacy rate is 100% and people are well versed in English.

The village also offers tourist attractions like a living root bridge and a sky walk which is 85 feet high.

There is a sight of natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock.
