New Delhi: If things go the way the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has advised, a new township will be constructed on the southern terrace of the Kedarnath shrine that was ravaged by flash floods in June last year.

The shrine will also be repaired by means of retrofitting. The GSI, which on Wednesday submitted its final report based on an in-depth survey of the disaster-hit five districts in Uttarakhand, advised the use of 'green blasting' technology to remove the debris.

The technology, a probable first in India, uses chemicals for breaking boulders, rather than dynamites.

The GSI has once again advised a total ban on other new construction works in the Kedarnath town.

Significantly, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has stated that all future plans like reconstruction works in the disaster-hit state would be chalked out on the basis of the GSI report.

The report also did not go into detail on the controversy whether the hydel projects were responsible for bringing such a big devastation in the state.
