    A police officer in Jharkhand's Hazaribag district was suspended for allegedly failing to check illegal coal mining and smuggling, officials said on Wednesday.     Sri Lankan President says he will appoint new PM this week

    Sri Lanka's embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said on Wednesday that he will appoint a new Prime Minister and a Cabinet this week which would introduce constitutional reforms, amid continuing widespread anti-government protests over the country's worst economic crisis.
    In an address to the nation, President Gotabaya also said that after appointing the new Prime Minister, and Government a constitutional amendment will be moved to enact the content of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which will vest more powers with the Parliament.

    Venus Pipes IPO fully subscribed within first few hours of opening

    The initial public offer of Venus Pipes and Tubes got fully subscribed within the first few hours of opening for subscription on Wednesday. The Rs 165.41-crore IPO received bids for 51,67,502 shares against 35,51,914 shares on offer, translating into 1.45 times subscription, according to NSE data till 13:03 hours.

    The category meant for Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) received 2.59 times subscription, while the portion for non- institutional investors got subscribed 34 per cent and Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) 30 per cent.

    UP woman kills teenage stepsons over property dispute

    A woman was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing her two teenage stepsons over property dispute in a village here, police said. The deceased were identified as Ajay (18) and Abhishek (15), they said. The incident came into light when around 5 am their mother Mansa Devi found them lying on their beds with their throats slit, Circle Officer of Rudrapur, Jilajeet, said.

    The deceased boys were taken to the hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead, the CO said.

    Jawans being sensitised ahead of Amarnath Yatra: CRPF

    CRPF personnel, who will be deployed for the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir, are being sensitised about the threat posed by "sticky bombs", a senior officer said on Wednesday, asserting that alertness is the best way to deal with the problem. In a first of its kind seizure in February last year, the Border Security Force (BSF) confiscated a drone-dropped consignment along the International Border in Samba district which included 14 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with in-built magnets.

    These could be used as "sticky bombs" by sticking them on vehicles and controlling them using a timer and a remotely-held device.
    Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Deputy Inspector General, Hiranagar Range, Devender Yadav, said alertness is the key to deal with the threat of "sticky bombs".

    Delhi HC delivers split verdict on criminalisation of marital rape

    The Delhi High Court Wednesday delivered a split verdict on the issue of criminalisation of marital rape and granted leave to the parties to file an appeal before the Supreme Court. 

    While Justice Rajiv Shakdher, who headed the division bench, favoured striking down the marital rape exception, Justice C Hari Shankar said the exception under the IPC is not unconstitutional and was based on an intelligible differentia.

    Delhivery Rs 5,235 crore IPO opens for subscription

    Logistics services provider Delhivery's Rs 5,235 crore initial public offering (IPO) opened for subscription on Wednesday. Gurugram-based company's IPO will be available for public subscription till Friday, May 13, 2022. The company has fixed a price band at Rs 462-487 per share with a face value of Re 1 per share.

    Out of the total Rs 5,235 crore size of the IPO, the company will raise Rs 4,000 crore through issuance of fresh equity shares with a face value of Re 1 each. The remaining Rs 1,235 crore is proposed to be raised through offer for sale route, in which existing shareholders and promoters will offload their stake.

    SC extends stay on non-bailable warrant against Noida CEO

    The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the stay on the non-bailable warrant issued by the Allahabad High Court against Noida Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and IAS officer Ritu Maheshwari till Friday (May 13) in connection with contempt proceedings against her.

    A bench of Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Krishna Murari adjourned the matter for Friday and asked to list the matter before "any appropriate bench" after getting direction from the Chief Justice of India.

    The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, had stayed the non-bailable warrant against Maheshwari.

    SC stays proceedings in sedition cases

    The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed all proceedings in sedition cases and directed the Centre and states to not register any fresh FIR invoking sedition charges until the government re-examines the colonial era penal law.

    A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana said all pending cases, appeals and proceedings with respect to charges framed for sedition should be kept in abeyance. Reliefs granted to the accused by courts would continue, it said and fixed the third week of July for hearing pleas challenging the validity of the provision; by then, the Centre would have the time to undertake the exercise to re-examine the provision.

    One accused arrested in 'Khalistan' flag incident

    Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Wednesday said that one accused has been arrested in connection with the 'Khalistan' flag incident.

    Thakur said that two accused were involved in putting up the flags on the wall of the state Assembly, out of which one has been nabbed this morning.

    India logs 2,897 new COVID-19 cases, 54 deaths

    The country logged 2,897 COVID-19 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Wednesday. The daily case tally of the virus remained below the 3,000-mark for the second day.

    The daily positivity rate is at 0.61 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate of COVID in India is at 0.74 per cent.

    As per the Ministry, the active COVID cases in the country stand at 19,494, constituting 0.05 per cent of India's total positive cases.
    In the last 24 hours, 2,986 patients recovered from the virus, taking the cumulative tally of recovered patients, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 4,25,66,935.

    India contributed USD 800,000 to promote Hindi at UN

    India has contributed USD 800,000 to the United Nations as part of the initiative to enhance public outreach of the organisation in Hindi.

    Country's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra handed over a cheque for the UN project launched by India in 2018 to disseminate information about the UN to the Hindi-speaking population across the world.

    "The Government of India has been making continuous efforts to expand the use of Hindi in the United Nations. As part of these efforts, 'Hindi @ UN' project, in collaboration with the UN Department of Public Information was launched in 2018 with an objective to enhance the public outreach of the United Nations in Hindi language, and to spread greater awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking people around the world," the UN said in a statement.

    IICF to move SC on Gynavapi case

    The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF) said that the videography being carried out at the Gyanvapi Mosque is a clear violation of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which laid down that a religious place will retain the same character it had on August 15, 1947.

    Chinese yuan weakens to 6.7290 against dollar

    7-year-old boy raped in Quetta madrassah

    A seven-year child has been raped inside a madrassah located in Pakistan's Quetta, Samaa TV reported.

    An FIR was registered by the victim's father, who said that his son went to a shop near their house on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m., where a boy identified as Abdul Hafeez, son of a seminary teacher Muhammad Ilyas Lehri, forcibly took him inside the madrassah's room and raped him.

    The father said his son returned home after two hours and narrated what had happened with teary eyes, the report said.

    UP: Former village head arrested for threatening Dalits

    A former village head was arrested after he allegedly made a man announce that if anyone from the Dalit community entered his field, they would be beaten with shoes 50 times and made to pay Rs 5,000 as fine, police said on Tuesday.

    In a video, Kunverpal is seen beating a drum to make the announcement on Monday in front of houses of Dalits in Pawti Khurd village in the district's Charthawal area, they said.

    Former village head Rajbir Tyagi made Kunverpal make the announcement after members of the Dalit community refused to work in his field, locals claimed.

    Leonid Kravchuk, independent Ukraine's 1st president, dies

    Leonid Kravchuk, who led Ukraine to independence amid the collapse of the Soviet Union and served as its first president, has died, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday. He was 88.

    Andriy Yermak, head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office, confirmed Kravchuk's death on the social media app Telegram without giving details of the circumstances. Kravchuk had been in poor health and underwent a heart operation last year.

    Kravchuk led Ukraine as its Communist Party boss in the waning years of the Soviet Union, and played a pivotal role in the demise of the USSR before holding the Ukrainian presidency from 1991 through 1994.

    Afghanistan at risk of becoming safe haven for terrorism: MoS Meenakashi Lekhi

    Union Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakashi Lekhi on Tuesday laid stress on Afghanistan becoming safe haven for terrorism at a high-level international conference on human rights, civil society and counter-terrorism.

    Speaking at the conference, she said, "Afghanistan is once again at the risk of becoming a safe haven for Al-Qaida, ISIL and a number of other UN-designated terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed," read the Ministry of External Affairs press release.

    Paying tribute to the victims of terrorism and their families for their pain, suffering and losses, Lekhi said that terrorism is the biggest violator of human rights.

    Death toll from Havana hotel blast rises to 42

    The death toll from last week's explosion at a historic hotel in downtown Havana climbed to 42 on Tuesday, after two more bodies were recovered from the rubble, official sources said.

    According to the Public Health Ministry, 96 people were injured in the blast at the five-star Saratoga Hotel, and 13 adults and five minors remain hospitalized at six city hospitals.

    Rescue teams continued to sift through the debris in search of three people, two chambermaids and a cook, reported missing, said Roberto Enriquez, spokesman for the state-run hotel management group Gaviota.

    The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine on May 12, sources in the Security Council told Sputnik.

    "It's confirmed. Thursday morning," a source said, adding that France and Mexico requested the meeting.

    India-Oman joint commission meet today

    India-Oman joint commission meeting will be held in New Delhi on May 11. The meeting will be co-chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his Oman counterpart Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef.

    According to a Commerce and Industry Ministry release, senior officials from both sides would be participating in the joint meeting. This will be the 10th edition of the India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting.
