    Jamia Millia Islamia has banned the entry of its three former students, including the 2020 riots accused Safoora Zargar, on its campus for "agitating" in the university over an "irrelevant and objectionable" issue. Signed by the chief proctor, the orders dated September 14 said the competent authority has approved a campus ban on ex-students for maintaining a peaceful academic environment.     'Bharat Jodo Yatra' enters Alappuzha district, Rahul Gandhi to meet youngsters

    Maharashtra: Thane sees 122.14 mm rain in 24 hours; three casualties reported

    Maharashtra's Thane city received 122.14 mm rain in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, and three rain-related deaths were reported in the district, civic officials said. This was the highest rainfall recorded by the city in one day this season, said Avinash Sawant, the chief of the regional disaster management cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation. As per official data, Thane city has recorded a total of 2690.40 mm rain till date this season, while it had witnessed 3164.27 mm in the same period last year. Rains played havoc in all low-lying areas with several incidents of tree falls being reported in various parts of the city, the official said. Three rain-related deaths were reported in Bhiwandi town, which was the worst-hit part of Thane district. According to fire officials, a power company employee accidentally fell into a river at Subash Nagar, while a five-year-old girl Gulnaz Ansari was washed away in a swollen nullah Diwanshah Dargah area of the town. In the third incident, a man fell into a quarry in Sonale village and drowned, they said.

    PM Modi birthday: Karnataka to launch 15-day health campaign from today

    The Karnataka government will celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday on Saturday by launching a 15-day health campaign focusing on screening and creating awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Starting Saturday, the campaign will culminate on October 2 on Gandhi Jayanti. State Health Minister K. Sudhakar said the initiative, which will be launched in the presence of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, is aimed at creating awareness among the people about non-communicable diseases, from children to elderly citizens. Speaking during a video conference with district health officers and top officials of the Health and Medical Education Department on Friday, Sudhakar gave instructions to the officials to focus on screening of various health parameters and diseases during the 15-day campaign at all health facilities, from primary health sub-centres to super-speciality hospitals.

    KCR unfurls tricolour on ‘Telangana National Integration Day’

    Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Saturday unfurled the national flag on Telangana Jateeya Samaikyata Dinotsavam (Telangana National Integration Day) here, to mark 75 years of Hyderabad's annexation to the Indian union. Rao unfurled the tricolour few minutes after Union Minister Amit Shah hoisted the flag at parade grounds marking the celebrations of ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day' elsewhere in the city. In his address, he said, “My heartfelt wishes to the people of Telangana on the occasion of Telangana Jateeya Samaikyata Dinotsavam. On September 17, 1948 Telangana became an integral part of India. It transformed from dynastic rule into the democratic phase." Telangana recently celebrated the 75 years of Independence Day in grandeur manner for 15 days, he noted.

    Madhya Pradesh: 2 choppers carrying Namibian cheetahs land near Kuno National Park from Gwalior

    Two helicopters carrying eight cheetahs reached Palpur near Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, following their arrival in Gwalior from Namibia in a special plane as part of the programme to reintroduce the feline in India seven decades after it was declared extinct in the country. The plane carrying the felines from Namibia landed at the Gwalior airbase shortly before 8 am, an official said. A modified Boeing aircraft, which took off from the African country Friday night, carried the cheetahs in special wooden crates during the around 10-hour journey.

    Udan scheme: Jamshedpur to soon be re-connected by air

    The steel city of Jamshedpur is all set to have air connectivity under the Union government's Udan scheme soon, said a senior official of Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district. Air services between Jamshedpur-Kolkata and Jamshedpur-Bhubaneswar are likely to be launched from October 30 with a nine-seater aircraft from Sonari aerodrome, Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order), Nandkishore Lal said on Friday. Deputy Development Commissioner Saurabh Sinha and Lal along with aerodrome officials, fire department officers, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee representatives and Traffic Deputy SP Kamal Kishore held a meeting over the issue and discussed security and fire safety arrangements.

    Rahul Gandhi kick-starts 10th day of Bharat Jodo Yatra

    Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday kick-started the tenth day of his Bharat Jodo Yatra from Puthiyakavu junction near Karunagappally here with thousands of party workers accompanying him waving party flags. Gandhi and the yatra members had halted at Karunagappally after walking around 24 km on Friday. The yatra, which resumed shortly after 6.30 am, will cover a distance of around 12 km and enter Alappuzha district and take a break at Kayamkulam at around 11 am.     California governor signs sweeping climate legislation

    Governor Gavin Newsom signed a sweeping package of bills Friday to expand California's reliance on clean energy and reduce carbon emissions, moves he said further establish the state as a global climate leader. The new laws include proposals aimed at reducing exposure to gas and oil pollution in communities of colour, expanding clean energy jobs and accelerating the state's timeline for getting most of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Newsom signed them following a record-breaking heat wave that forced California to rely more heavily on natural gas for its electricity production. "We could talk about the way the world should be and protest it,” Newsom said while standing underneath an array of solar panels. “Or we can actually make demonstrable progress.”

    India and Chinese leaders expressing their concerns directly with the Russian leader about the war in Ukraine is reflective of global concerns about the effects of its aggression, US Secretary of State Tony Blinken said Friday. "What you're hearing from China, from India, is reflective of concerns around the world about the effects of Russia's aggression on Ukraine – not just on the people of Ukraine, devastating as that's been, but on countries and people across the entire planet,” Blinken told reporters at a joint media availability with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. "It's an aggression not just against Ukraine and its people, it's an aggression against the very principles of international relations that help keep peace and security,” he said. He was responding to a question on leaders of China and India expressing their concern about the war in Ukraine directly to Vladimir Putin. “Do you see this as a significant shift for Russia on the international stage?” he was asked.
