    189 inmates of Maha jails to be released on Republic Day under special remission programme

    A total of 189 inmates lodged in different prisons of Maharashtra will be released on the Republic Day next week as part of a special remission programme, officials said on Wednesday.

    The Maharashtra Prisons Department said in a statement that in order to commemorate the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', the Centre has decided to give special remission to certain categories of prisoners on the basis of their good conduct during their term and free them on three occasions - August 15, 2022, January 26, 2023, and August 15, 2023.

    Jharkhand: Warden, teachers show-caused after 61 girls complaint of atrocities

    The hostel warden and five others of a residential school were transferred and show-caused on Wednesday, two days after its 61 girl students walked 17 km at night and complained about atrocities committed on them to the authorities of Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district.

    An official said that besides the warden, four teachers and the accountant of Kasturba Gandhi Girls School at Khuntpani were also served show-cause notices and transferred, while the night guard was removed.

    Gold declines Rs 105; silver rises Rs 52

     Gold price declined Rs 105 to Rs 56,526 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the precious metal had ended at Rs 56,631 per 10 grams.

    Silver, however, rose Rs 52 to Rs 69,694 per kilogram.

    "Spot gold prices in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 56,526 per 10 grams, down Rs 105 per 10 grams," said an analyst at HDFC Securities.

    Suspected IED planted in tiffin box seized in J&K's Rajouri: Police

    A suspected improvised explosive device (IED), planted in a tiffin box, was seized in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Wednesday, a senior police official said. Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Mohammad Aslam said the object was found from an open field in the town's Kheora locality in the afternoon. The area was immediately cordoned off.

    Kashmir solution within constitutional framework: Mehbooba

    PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said the solution to the Kashmir problem is within the framework of the Constitution but the starting point for any reconciliation will have to be the restoration of the special status and statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

    "There is no way other than reconciliation in Jammu and Kashmir but the starting point for it will be the restoration of whatever has been snatched from the (erstwhile) state," Mufti told reporters here.

    Noida Metro's anniversary gift: Free smart cards to commuters

     The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) will give free smart cards to commuters for a 10-day period from January 26, officials said on Wednesday. This is being done to mark the fourth anniversary of the launch of the Aqua Line of the metro network connecting Noida and Greater Noida, the NMRC said. "NMRC is celebrating the ongoing 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' - 75 years of India's Independence and its fourth anniversary of successful commercial operation of Aqua Line on January 26, 2023," NMRC Managing Director Ritu Maheshwari said.

    Maha ATS now gets 15-day extension to file charge sheet against five PFI members

    A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday granted another extension, this time of 15 days, to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to file its charge sheet in connection with the arrest of five members of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI) for alleged unlawful activities and waging war against the country.

    Last month, the court had granted 30 days extension to the agency to file the charge sheet.

    Delhi court grants bail to Kamal Nath's nephew Ratul Puri in fertiliser scam

     A Delhi court on Wednesday granted bail to Ratul Puri, nephew of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, in a money laundering case linked to an alleged fertiliser scam for which Rs 685 crore was claimed to have been paid as kickback.

    Special Judge Vikas Dhull granted the relief to Puri after he appeared before the court pursuant to summons issued against him.

    Karnataka HC adjourns Twitter takedown case reluctantly

    Following a request by the central government, the High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday once again adjourned the hearing of the petition by Twitter against the government’s takedown orders. Additional Solicitor General R Sankaranarayanan informed the court that the Solicitor General was arguing another case before a Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court and he had just returned after a bout of illness.
