    Maha: Man kills daughter after she threatens to leave home permanently in Nashik, held

     A 45-year-old man allegedly strangled his 24-year-old daughter to death with a stole after she threatened to leave him permanently after an argument over her marriage, police said.

    The accused Ramkishore Bharti, a resident of Chunchale near the city, prima facie committed the crime as he was fed up with his daughter's habit of leaving home over trivial reasons, a police official said.

    Punjab: Man attempts to hug Rahul Gandhi during Bharat Jodo Yatra in Hoshiarpur

    A man rushed towards Rahul Gandhi and tried to hug him as the Bharat Jodo Yatra traversed through the district on Tuesday but was stopped by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.     Bike taxi aggregator Rapido moves SC against HC order directing suspension of its services in Maharashtra

    The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear on January 23 a plea of bike taxi aggregator Rapido against the Bombay High Court order directing it to suspend its services in Maharashtra immediately for operating without a licence from the state government.
    A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha agreed to hear the petition of the Pune-based bike taxi aggregator after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the firm, said the matter needs to be listed urgently.

    Over 25 hospitalised after eating at restaurant in Kerala

    Over 25 people were admitted to various hospitals in Ernakulam district on Tuesday after having food at an eatery in North Paravoor.
    According to the police, 27 people with symptoms of food poisoning have been hospitalised and their condition is said to be stable.
    A case has been registered against the owner of the restaurant and an investigation is on. "The number of affected persons may go up," a police official told PTI.

    Fresh petition in SC against Bihar govt's move to conduct caste survey

     A fresh petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Tuesday against the Bihar government's decision to conduct a caste survey in the state, claiming the state's action was violative of the basic structure of the Constitution.
    The petition, filed by 'Hindu Sena' President Vishnu Gupta, alleged the notification was "discriminatory and unconstitutional".

    5 Somali troops die in attack; 21 al-Shabab fighters killed

     An attack by the al-Shabab extremist group on a military facility north of Somalia's capital on Tuesday killed five soldiers, officials said. Somali troops repelled the assault, killing 21 al-Shabab fighters. The group has claimed responsibility for the attack at the Hawaadley military facility in Xawaadley village in the Middle Shabelle region, 75 kilometres (about 45 miles) north of Mogadishu. Somalia's Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Odawa Yusuf Rage said that the attackers were “repulsed by the brave Somali soldiers who were on high alert".

    SC agrees to hear plea of journalist Rana Ayyub against summons in money laundering case

    The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear the petition of journalist Rana Ayyub challenging the summons issued to her by a special PMLA court in Ghaziabad in a money laundering case lodged against her by the Enforcement Directorate.

    A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha agreed to hear the plea on January 23, after advocating Vrinda Grover, appearing for Ayyub, urged the court for urgent listing.

    After months-long protest, Punjab CM Mann orders closure of liquor factory in Ferozepur

     Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday ordered the immediate closure of a distillery and ethanol plant in Ferozepur after a months-long agitation against the unit by local villagers. Alleging that the distillery was polluting groundwater in several villages and causing air pollution, the villagers staged demonstrations in front of the plant for the past six months under the banner of Sanjha Zira Morcha.

    3 killed as car falls into gorge in U'khand

    Three people were killed on Tuesday when their car fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Tehri district, police said. The accident took place near Saldogi on the Agrakhal-Kusrela road when the car plunged into a 250-metre-deep gorge killing all three on the spot, Circle Officer Ravindra Chamoli said.

    French soccer president targeted by sexual harassment probe

    French soccer federation president Noël Le Graët is under investigation for "sexual harassment" and "moral harassment," the Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday. In a message to The Associated Press, the prosecutor's office said the investigation was opened on Monday following a report by the General Inspectorate of Education, Sport and Research.
    It will be carried out by a special police unit dedicated to crimes against individuals.

    Encounter in J-K's Budgam, two terrorists killed

    Two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists were killed in a brief encounter with security personnel near the court complex in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district on Tuesday, police said. "On a specific input about the movement of terrorists through Budgam, a joint area domination party of the Army and Police tried to stop one suspected vehicle near the court complex. Terrorists fired upon and in retaliation, two terrorists were killed," a police spokesperson said.

    US: 11-year-old fatally shot in Dallas by teen arguing with another

     A 14-year-old girl fatally shot an 11-year-old boy at a Dallas apartment complex parking lot after retrieving a gun during an argument with another child, police said.
    Police said that the 14-year-old shot in the direction of the girl she was fighting with, but the shot ended up striking the 11-year-old bystander on Sunday afternoon.
