    Flight data, voice recorders retrieved from Nepal crash site

    Search teams retrieved the flight data and cockpit voice recorders Monday of a passenger plane that plummeted into a gorge on approach to a new airport in the foothills of the Himalayas, officials said, as investigators looked for the cause of Nepal’s deadliest plane crash in 30 years.

    At least 69 of the 72 people aboard were killed, and officials believe the three missing are also dead. Rescuers combed through the debris, scattered down a 300-meter-deep (984-foot-deep) gorge, for them.

    Chhattisgarh: Two men, minor boy held for raping 13-year-old girl

    Two persons have been arrested and a minor boy was detained for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in Bastar in Chhattisgarh, a police official said on Monday. The girl was raped in the intervening night of January 11 and 12 after she was given a cold drink laced with sedatives, the Bodhghat police station official said.

    In threat, Hamas releases video said to show captive Israeli

    he Palestinian militant group Hamas released a video Monday of an Israeli it said was being held captive in the Gaza Strip, rare footage it described as a warning to Israel's new army chief. Hamas' military wing, the Qassam Brigades, shared the video, which purportedly showed Israeli prisoner Avera Mengistu calling on the Israeli military to secure his freedom. It remained unclear when the video was taken.

    Imran Khan hints at returning to Pakistan's National Assembly

    For the first time, opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Monday hinted at returning to the National Assembly to be part of the consultative process of a caretaker setup for general elections later this year.

    Following Khan's ouster as prime minister through a no-confidence motion in April last year, the 131 PTI members of the National Assembly had resigned.
    However, the NA speaker has yet to accept their resignations and called in all the PTI lawmakers to verify if their resignations are "genuine and voluntary".

    Maha: Farmers protest in Malegaon as Nashik cooperative bank starts loan recovery

    Thousands of farmers on Monday began a protest in Maharashtra’s Nashik alleging the district's central cooperative bank was auctioning assets like land and vehicles of those who are unable to pay loans. The 'birhad' protest, where farmers were joined by their families, was led by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana chief Rahu Shetti and took place in front of the Malegaon home of guardian minister Dada Bhuse.

    December WPI inflation cools to 22-month low of 4.95 pc on lower food, vegetable prices

    The wholesale price-based inflation declined to a 22-month low of 4. 95 per cent in December 2022, mainly due to fall in prices of food articles, especially vegetables, on easing supply side pressure and a higher base of last year. This is the seventh straight month of declining Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation.

    Islamic extremists claimed responsibility for a bombing of a church in eastern Congo as authorities said on Monday that the toll from Sunday's attack had risen to at least 14 dead.     The Supreme Court on Monday said it will hear on January 18 a plea of US tech giant Google against an order of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) refusing an interim stay on the competition regulator imposing a Rs 1,337 crore penalty on it. The NCLAT, on January 4, had refused an interim stay on an order of the competition regulator and had asked Google to deposit 10 percent of the amount.

    The crashed ATR-72 Nepalese passenger plane was previously used by the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, according to Cirium Fleets data.     SC seeks response of Centre on pleas seeking criminalisation of marital rape

    The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response of the Centre on a batch of petitions pertaining to criminalisation of marital rape. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala asked the Union government to file its response on the issue by February 15 and the final hearing on the pleas would commence from March 21. One of pleas has been filed in relation to the Delhi High Court's split verdict on the issue.This appeal has been filed by Khushboo Saifi, one of the petitioners before the Delhi High Court.

    State-owned NHAI has no information about faulty FASTags and the penalties collected from motorists in case their FASTags are non-functional at highway toll plazas. In case a motorist does not have a FASTag or it is non-functional, then the person has to pay double the toll charges at toll plazas.     Catholic priest burned alive in Nigeria's hard-hit north

    A Nigerian priest was burned alive in his home in the country's north on Sunday, police said. Father Isaac Achi was killed in the Paikoro area of Niger state after gunmen failed to break into his house and instead set it on fire, said Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesman. A second priest living in the compound escaped with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, he said.

    Expanded US training for Ukraine forces begins in Germany

    The US military's new, expanded combat training of Ukrainian forces began in Germany on Sunday, with a goal of getting a battalion of about 500 troops back on the battlefield to fight the Russians in the next five to eight weeks, said Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Milley, who plans to visit the Grafenwoehr training area on Monday to get a first-hand look at the programme, said the troops being trained left Ukraine a few days ago. In Germany is a full set of weapons and equipment for them to use.
    Until now the Pentagon had declined to say exactly when the training would start.

    Two suspected drug traffickers were killed early Sunday in a shootout with federal agents off Puerto Rico's northeast coast, officials said.
