21 Injured As Train Derails In MP

Vidisha (MP), May 9: Twenty-one passengers were injured, six of them seriously, when the Mumbai-Pratapgarh Udyognagri Express derailed near here early today, disrupting rail traffic in the sector.


The Pratapgarh-bound train derailed around 6.20 AM between Sourai-Sumer stations, six kms from here, District Collector (Vidisha) C B Singh said.

Twenty-one passengers were injured in the mishap, he said.

Earlier, railway officials said that about 25 passengers were injured.

A total of five bogies derailed out of which four overturned due to the impact of the mishap disrupting rail traffic between Bhopal and New Delhi, Bhopal Divisional Raiway Manager (DRM), Ghanshyam Singh said.

Some of the derailed bogies slided down as the railway track was at a height at the site of the accident, railway officials said.

Three sleeper-coaches, one general and an SLR coach derailed due to the mishap. Rail traffic has been restored on the up line while efforts are on to repair the damaged track on the down line on war-footing.

The seriously injured were referred to Bhopal's Hamidia Hospital for treatment while the remaining were admitted in the District Hospital here, the Collector said.

Rescue operations are over at the spot and railway officials are trying to ascertain the cause of the accident, the DRM said, adding traffic is likely to be restored by tonight.

The Udyognagri Express with remaining 15 coaches left the spot at around 9 AM for its onward journey, the DRM said.

While few trains were cancelled due to the mishap, many others were diverted via Ujjain-Ratlam-Kota route to Delhi. PTI
