The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking complete ban on liquor across the country.
Disposing of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashwani Upadhaya, a division bench comprising Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice N. V. Ramanna said that there was no merit in the petition.
The PIL had called for a nationwide ban on liquor by pointing out that it was not in consonance with the Directive Principles of State Policy, under which improving public health is among the primary duties of the state.
The petition further said that the use of alcohol should be restricted to medical purposes only. It had also pointed out that liquor is the root cause of most road accidents, road rage, crime against women, domestic violence, rape and murder and many other social evils.
