The Supreme Court on Friday declined to entertain a plea challenging the ordinance on the voluntary use of Aadhaar as an identity proof for opening bank accounts and getting new mobile phones connection.

Declining to entertain the plea by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and lawyer Reepak Kansal, the bench of Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice S. Abdul Nazir asked them to approach the High Court.

The Cabinet had on March 1 approved the ordinance for the voluntary use of Aadhaar as an identity proof for opening bank accounts and getting mobile connections.

The government decided to promulgate the ordinance as the bill for the use of Aadhaar as an identity proof was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 4 and was pending with the Rajya Sabha.

President Ram Nath Kovind had approved the ordinance on March 3.
