A Panipat court today acquitted LeT operative Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda due to lack of evidence in a case related to the bomb blast that hit the city in 1997.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Vedprakash Sirohi observed that since no witness has been produced by the police in the case, the 72-year-old, accused under the Explosive Substance Act, be discharged.

Tunda was produced in the court on Monday in connection with 1997 bomb blast in a private bus in Panipat. A 10-year-old was killed and several others were injured in the blast.

Tunda is accused of masterminding over 40 bombings in the country. He was brought to Karnal Jail on Tuesday evening after he was attacked by two inmates inside a jail at Karnal last week.

His security inside the jail was increased in the wake of the attack.

Tunda was arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell at the Nepal-India border in 2013.
