Delhi government on Saturday announced an award of Rs 1 crore to Olympic medal winner wrestler Sakshi Malik.
On Wednesday, the 23-year-old wrestler ended the country's wait for a medal at the Rio Olympic Games as she bagged the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, pulling off a dramatic 8-5 victory in the play-off bout.
Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who today visited Sakshi's native place Rohtak in Haryana, made this announcement.
He also announced a direct promotion for the athlete’s father Sukhbir Malik, who is employed with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) as conductor.
Sakshi will also be getting Rs 2.5 crore prize money from Haryana government, Rs 60 lakhs from Indian Railways and the Rs 20 lakhs from Indian Olympic Association.
The 23-year-old girl touched glory at the Rio Olympics earlier this week by clinching the bronze in the Women's Freestyle 58kg category with a spirited comeback victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.
