The Delhi government's decision to reserve 80% of beds and counters at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital is creating problems for other hospitals in the area.

This reservation policy was implemented in the hospital from October 1 on a pilot basis. Due to this policy, the footfall of patients has tremendously increased  in the nearby Swami Dayanand Hospital though the number has gone down in GTB.

Medical Director of GTB Hospital, Dr. Kirti Bhushan, said that the study of the pilot project is going on and that a decision will be taken within 1-2 months on the implementation of the project in other hospitals.

Dr. Bhushan accepted that this will lead to some inconvenience because of the increasing number of patients in other hospitals of the state.

"However, if this scheme is applied in all the hospitals of Delhi, the residents of Delhi will get better medical services," she told a leading Hindi daily.

The state government has also decided that the residents of Delhi can avail free health care and medicine at the GTB hospital.

It is important to note that the GTB Hospital is the only one in Delhi which is experimenting with 80% reservation policy.

Non-Delhi residents can get medical services in OPD (Out Patient Department), but not free medicines and services at GTB Hospital.
