The CBI on Monday said it has registered a case against a commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) in Delhi, his wife and other unidentified persons on charges of amassing illicit assets worth Rs 4.28 crore.

The premier investigation agency booked the IT Commissioner Haribansh Kumar Choudhary, a 1988 batch officer, his wife Anupama Choudhary and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

"It was alleged that the IT official has amassed immovable and movable properties in his name and in the name of his family members which were disproportionate to the known sources of his income," said Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spokesperson R.K. Gaur.

The officer said that the IT Commissioner had made the property while working as public servant in different capacities from the post of Assistant Commissioner to now.

A CBI team also conducted searches at 12 premises of the IT Commissioner located in Chennai, Surat, Saharsa in Bihar and Delhi on Monday and recovered incriminating documents related to information of properties and some companies in the name of his wife, mother and son.

"Searches were also conducted at the premises of some chartered accountants at Chennai and Surat who were allegedly associated with the said officer," the officer said.
