Chidambaram's protection from arrest extended till January 11

Interim protection granted to former Union Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis scam was on Tuesday extended till January 11 next year, by Delhi’s Patiala House Court. Special Judge OP Saini extended the relief granted to Chidambaram and his son after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitted that new material has been recovered which needs to be collated.

The court also granted time till January 11 to the CBI to get sanction to prosecute some of people accused in the case.

The CBI had on November 26 told the court that Centre had granted sanction to prosecute P Chidambaram. The case relates to alleged irregularities in grant of FIPB approval in Aircel-Maxis deal.

Earlier on October 31, the ED had opposed Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case. The ED also sought the custodial interrogation of the Congress leader.

Chidambaram has remained evasive and was not cooperating in the probe, the ED had said, which filed its response to the anticipatory bail plea of the Congress leader.

On October 8, the court had extended till November 1, the interim protection from arrest granted to Chidambaram and his son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis case filed by the CBI and the ED.

Chidambaram had filed the plea for protection from arrest in the ED case on May 30 this year after which he got relief from the court on various occasions.

The charge sheet against Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case was filed by the agency on October 25.

It had accused him of conspiring with foreign investors to clear their venture.
