One person was killed, and several others sustained injuries after a crane at an under-construction site collapsed onto several vehicles parked near a building in Mumbai on Thursday evening, police said.
The incident took place in the Mira Road area of the city. As per preliminary reports, the crane was stationed on the 13th floor of the building when it came crashing down.
Police and emergency personnel have been rushed to the spot, and rescue and relief efforts are underway.
Student dies in Chembur tree collapse
The incident brought back haunting memories of the Chembur mishap in which a school student was killed after a tree fell onto a school van amid heavy rains in Mumbai on June 30.
The incident occurred near Diamond Garden in Chembur (West), when a 60-70-year-old peepal tree was uprooted and crashed onto a moving school bus carrying 13 students. An 11-year-old student was killed, while four others sustained injuries.
According to the BMC, no public complaints had previously been received regarding the condition of the tree. Officials said the tree had undergone an external inspection on May 12 and was found to be healthy and structurally sound.
The tree was also pruned on May 29 as part of the civic body's annual pre-monsoon maintenance exercise and was considered safe at the time, the BMC said.
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inquiry committee has recommended imposing a total penalty of Rs 7 lakh on a road work contractor and a supervising consultant following the death of an 11-year-old student in a tree collapse incident in Mumbai's Chembur.
The three-member committee, constituted after the June 30 tragedy, submitted its report on Monday. It recommended a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the road work contractor and Rs 2 lakh on the supervising consultant. However, the panel found no prima facie negligence on the part of the BMC's Gardens Department or Roads Department.
