Pitru Paksha is traditionally observed as a time to remember and honour ancestors. During these days, families perform rituals such as Shraadh, Tarpan and Pind Daan for the peace of their departed ancestors. Along with these rituals, charity and donations are also considered an important part of Pitru Paksha traditions.

According to religious beliefs, making donations with devotion during Pitru Paksha is said to please ancestors and help in seeking their blessings. It is also believed to provide relief from Pitru Dosha and bring peace, happiness and prosperity to the household. This year, Pitru Paksha will conclude on October 10, 2026, with Sarvapitru Amavasya. So, what can you donate during this period? Here are some of the traditionally recommended items.

Black sesame

Donating black sesame, or kala til, is traditionally considered especially auspicious during Pitru Paksha. According to religious beliefs, offering black sesame in charity pleases the ancestors and is believed to help a person overcome difficulties quickly.

Silver items

Those who can afford it may also choose to donate silver items during Pitru Paksha. Silver utensils, coins or other silver articles can be given as donations. According to traditional belief, such offerings invite the blessings of ancestors and are associated with prosperity and abundance.

Food grains

Food donation is another important tradition during Pitru Paksha. People can offer meals to Brahmins and also donate food grains to poor or needy people. Religious beliefs associate Anna Daan with satisfying the ancestors and seeking their blessings for the growth and well-being of the family lineage.

Clothes

Clothes can also be donated to Brahmins or people in need during Pitru Paksha. The clothes should be clean and new. Torn or old clothes are traditionally considered inappropriate for donation as part of Shraadh rituals.

Other things you can donate

Apart from these items, people can also donate books, rice, salt, ghee, other food items and articles used in everyday life. According to traditional beliefs, donating these essentials helps maintain happiness and prosperity in the family.

Things to remember while donating

  • Donations during Pitru Paksha are traditionally expected to be made with faith and a selfless intention. Showing off or feeling pride about the donation is discouraged.
  • While making an offering, devotees are advised to remember their ancestors and express gratitude towards them.
  • If Shraadh or Pind Daan is being performed, donations after the ritual should traditionally be given to a deserving Brahmin.
  • In religious rituals, donations are traditionally given with the right hand.
  • Torn or old clothes, stale food and broken or damaged items should not be donated.
  • Once a donation has been made, it is traditionally advised not to repeatedly mention it or talk about it in front of others.
