Nag Panchami is not only associated with the worship of Nag Devta. The festival is also linked to several spiritual traditions, with the worship of Nag Devta and Lord Shiva considered significant on the occasion.
Nag Panchami will be observed on August 17 this year. In an Instagram video, spiritual guide Lovish Kandoi spoke about the spiritual significance of the festival, including Kaal Sarp Dosh, karmic energies and seeking the blessings of Nag Devta and Lord Shiva.
Why Nag Devta is worshipped on Nag Panchami
Nag Panchami is observed on the Panchami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. Nag Devta is worshipped on the occasion and is also associated with Lord Shiva, who is depicted with a serpent around his neck.
Kandoi described Nag Panchami as a "very powerful and important day" from a spiritual perspective. He said worshipping Nag Devta on this day can help devotees seek relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh and remove obstacles from life.
He also said Nag Panchami is a time to calm the "karmic energies" of past lives and seek the grace of Nag Devta, who is considered dear to Lord Shiva. According to Kandoi, this can bring "sukh, shanti aur samriddhi", or happiness, peace and prosperity, into one's life.
3 things to do on Nag Panchami
Kandoi recommended three practices for devotees seeking the blessings of Nag Devta and Lord Shiva on Nag Panchami:
- Offer water and milk to Nag Devta: Kandoi said devotees should offer water and milk to Nag Devta.
- Perform Jal Abhishek on Shivling: He advised devotees to perform a jal abhishek on the Shivling and offer belpatra.
- Offer blue flowers and recite Nag Stuti: Kandoi said devotees should offer blue flowers to Nag Devta and recite Nag Stuti.
For devotees observing the festival, the day is centred on prayer, worship and seeking blessings for happiness, peace and prosperity, along with following the traditional rituals associated with Nag Panchami.
