Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of India's largest and most revered festivals and will be celebrated on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in the city of Puri, Odisha. Every year, lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad visit Puri to witness the grand procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, who step out of the Jagannath Temple and begin their journey towards the Gundicha Temple.
Most Hindu festivals involve devotees visiting temples to seek the darshan of the deities, but Rath Yatra is unique because the deities themselves come out to bless their devotees.

Why is Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrated?
According to Hindu tradition, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra leave the Jagannath Temple every year to visit the Gundicha Temple, believed to be the home of their maternal aunt (Mausi Maa). This annual journey symbolises the Lord's desire to step out of the temple and bless every devotee, irrespective of caste, creed or social status. Among the striking traditions of the festival is the construction of new, massive wooden chariots every year using carefully selected wood, rather than reusing the previous year's chariots.
