Gandhi Ji's life story and his contribution to India
Mahatma Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, went on to become one of the most prominent figures of India's freedom movement. He studied law in London and later travelled to South Africa, where experiences of racial discrimination played an important role in shaping his approach to equality and resistance.
Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and became a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress. He promoted ideas including Satyagraha, non-violence and Swadeshi, and led or inspired several major campaigns against British rule. His role in the 1930 Salt March and the 1942 Quit India movement remains an important part of the history of India's independence struggle.
Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. His birthday, October 2, is observed in India as Gandhi Jayanti and internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence.
