Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama: A 92-year-old family connection you probably didn't know

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor is all set to make his big-screen comeback this year with his highly awaited film, Ramayana, in which he will play the role of Lord Rama. But, what is more interesting is that it is a full-circle moment for his family, for the unversed, as 92 years ago, one of his ancestors played the role of Lord Rama on screen. Read on to know who played this role. 

On the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, on April 2, 2026, the makers unveiled the first glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor's character Lord Rama. The teaser was 2 minutes and 38 seconds long, which was cleared by the CBFC recieved widespread attention from fans online. The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has an star-studded cast, including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman and others. 

Ranbir Kapoor's great grand father Prithviraj Kapoor played Lord Rama

What makes Ramayana even more special for Ranbir Kapoor is that his great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor, played Lord Rama in the 1933 film Seeta, marking a full-circle moment for his family. The film, directed by Debaki Bose and produced by the East India Film Company, was a landmark in the history of Bengali talkies.

It gained international recognition and was awarded an honorary diploma at the Venice International Film Festival in 1934. Notably, it was the first Indian talkie to be screened at an international film festival.

In this film, actress Durga Khote played the role of Sita, and other actors such as Gul Hamid as Laxman and Trilok Kapoor as Luv, Lord Ram's son. Almost a century after the portrayal of the character by Prithviraj Kapoor, the iconic role of Lord Rama is taken up by Ranbir Kapoor in the epic.

Ramayana Part 1 and Part 2 release timelines

For the unversed, the mythological epic film Ramayana is being released in two parts. The first part is slated to be released in Diwali 2026, followed by the second part titled Ramayana: Part 2 in Diwali 2027.
