He may be engaged and committed to long time girl-friend Avantika Malik in real life, but that hasn't deterred actor Imran Khan from playing a flirt in 'I Hate Luv Storys', which according to him was not a tough ask.
"Playing Jay in IHLS was not a hard role. It was not tough to act what I am not in real life because the script was good and debutante director Punit Malhotra explained the character so well," Imran told PTI in Mumbai.
The 27-year-old actor said even though 'IHLS' was a romantic comedy, his role cannot be compared to his debut role in 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', in which coincidently his screen name was Jai.
"In IHLS, my character is Jai Dhingra. But he likes to call himself as Jay only because he does not like his last name. Jai of 'Jaane Tu..' was an innocent, straight forward, good boy.
"But, in IHLS, he is a flirt, Casanova. He tries to date as many girls as possible. He lies to them and can go to any extent to woo a girl. He is a bad boy. He believes in dating girls and not in love," the actor said. Besides, the difference in the characters, Imran, who plays assistant to a director played by Sameer Soni in the film, said the humour in IHLS is cheeky.
Asserting that he is satisfied with the way the movie has turned up, the actor said, "I hope the audiences also feels the same." On whether he was comfortable doing romantic films, Imran said there was more scope to perform in such movies but added he would not like to be slotted with a particular image.
"Comfort comes anywhere. As an actor when you are acting in a romantic film, it is more fun. Romance, comedy depends on how actors say their lines. There is more acting in them. Whereas, in action movies, there is less acting and dialogues as focus is on how well the stunts are," he said.
"I don't want to get slotted into a particular image. My uncle (Aamir Khan) has done romantic, comedy, action, period, education based films. He does not have an image. It is the film that works if it is well made and good," he added.
Imran said working with debutant directors helped him as his thinking matched with them. "I have done six films till date out of which three have been released. Four movies -Jaane Tu..., IHLS, 'Break ke Baad' and 'Delhi Belly' are with debutant directors," he said.
"I realised that I share my thinking, interests with my directors who are debutants. We speak the same language. Punit is just two years older than me. I think we have made a young film... a film that we understand," he said. Imran, however, added that he preferred the debutant directors, who are writers as well.
"Abbas wrote 'Jaane Tu...', Punit has written IHLS, even my 'Break ke Baad' director has written the movie. If not a writer, the director should at least have an understanding how to write a script," he said. PTI
