6. Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday
'Black Friday', a 2004 film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, earned the ire of some political sections for focusing on the aftermath of the Bombay blasts in 1993. The movie was banned from release until the verdict of the lawsuit by the Bombay High Court on the petition was under-trials.
Producers appealed at the Supreme Court for the release but the High Court order was upheld. Originally, the film was scheduled to be released in India on 28 January 2005 but it saw its release on 9 February 2007.
7. Mira nair's Water
Water is a movie set in 1938 and explores the lives of widows at an ashram in Varanasi. The movie suffered severe objection during its shooting from hardline Hindu organizations in the region.
The sets were destroyed following which the Uttar Pradesh government decided to stop the shooting on 31 January 2000. Later, the shooting was shifted to Sri Lanka. And final the movie was released in India much later in March 2007.
8. Mallika Sherawat's Dirty Politics on Bhanwari Devi gang rape
Patna High Court had banned the release of Dirty Politics, the movie which is apparently inspired from the real life story of Bhanwari Devi, whose alleged gang rape and the following court case attracted widespread media attention nationally and internationally.
The Mallika Sherawat starrer movie, filled with cuss words and explicit scenes, got an A certificate from the censor board. But, following the petition filed against the film in Bihar where in certain mentioned scenes had been considered objectionable; the release was haltered in the state. Though, later the ban was rescinded.
The movie has showcased ‘Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha' in its poster, over which both Congress and BJP have raised their objection.
9. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's MSG- The Messenger (of God)
MSG: Messenger of God, starring Dera Saccha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's, remained a bone of contention between the government and CBFC.
While Censor Board Chairperson Leela Samson was against the screening citing the reason of ‘hurting religious sentiments, the government's gave clearance to the movie with a mere change in the title making it MSG- The Messenger instead of ‘MSG- The Messenger of God'.
Following government's approval Leela Sampson resigned from her post, Punjab govt. banned the release in view of reports of tension in several parts of the state and outside while the controversial movie earned big mullahs on the box office.
10. Fifty Shades of Grey- an adaptation of the 2011 best-selling erotic novel
India has blocked the release of the movie Fifty Shades of Grey- an adaptation of the 2011 best-selling erotic novel. The censor board had objected to some of the film's dialogue, even after the distributor made voluntary edits to the film to tone down its sex scenes and removed all nudity.
Apart from India, the film has been banned in Malaysia, Indonesia and Kenya for its kinky storyline. In 1996, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love was also banned in India for sexual content.
