Vidya Balan to play India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on silverscreen

'I have always wanted to play Indira Gandhi', said Vidya Balan while talking about her role.

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan, who was last seen in Suresh Triveni’s Tumhari Sulu, is all set to essay the role of Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only woman Prime Minister till date. The actress acquired the adaptation rights of Sagarika Ghose’s book Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister. Talking about the role, Vidya told that it was her long cherished dream to portray Gandhi on screen,

"I am happy to have acquired the rights to Sagarika Ghose's 'Indira' because I have always wanted to play Indira Gandhi. I haven't decided yet whether it should be a film or a web series, but that will take a while anyway," Vidya said in a statement.

Ghose took to Facebook to share her excitement. "Elated to announce that I just signed the contract for the movie rights of my book 'Indira: India's Most Powerful Prime Minister' with Vidya Balan and Roy Kapur Productions. Most excited to see 'Indira' on screen!" she wrote.

Sagarika Ghose’s book on Indira Gandhi received polarising reviews Her book draws anecdotes from the works of several historians and biographers. Her book explores the chapters of history and elaborates the reasons behind the Emergency imposed in 1975 and her numerous political battles.

Vidya Balan was last seen in Suresh Triveni’s comedy-drama film Tumhari Sulu. The film opened to mixed reviews from the critics. In the flick, Vidya essayed the role of a middle-class woman who struggles to make ends meet for her family of three.
