After taking a break this year post-Padmaavat, Bollywood diva Deepika Padukone is all set to treat her fans with yet another powerful film which is based on an acid attack survivor. While the rumours were rife that actor Rajkummar Rao might play the lead role in the film but now it is confirmed that Vikrant Massey will be seen opposite the actress in Laxmi Agarwal’s biopic. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film is titled as Chhapaak.
Going by the reports in Mumbai Mirror, Vikrant Massey will play the lead opposite Deepika and the director Meghna Gulzar has herself confirmed the news. She reportedly said, “The cast is slowly coming together. Vikrant is somebody I’ve wanted to work with since Raazi, after seeing him in A Death in the Gunj. In the film, he plays a North Indian boy who used to be a professional before he decided to become an actor, then, started a campaign against acid violence which is how he came to meet Laxmi in real life. I speak for both Deepika and myself when I say that we are both really excited to have Vikrant play this part.”
Meghna also spilled the details about the film. She revealed that Chhapaak will be shot in Mumbai and Delhi and prosthetics tests are underway. Talking about the film, she said that during the research for the film the only person who came to her mind to play the lead role is Deepika. Meghna Added, “It was that organic because it’s such a moving story. And the decision to co-produce the film with her also happened organically because I wanted to remain close to it through the entire process.”
With Chhapaak, Deepika Padukone is venturing into production. Laxmi Agarwal, on whom the film is based, also revealed that she is happy that Deepika will be playing her part. She earlier told Hindustan Times, “I am so happy that Deepika is playing the role. I have no right to judge her. How can I judge someone for something which I can’t do. She has played wonderful characters on screen and I believe she will give her best. I want to thank Deepika ji, Meghna ji and the entire team who will be working together on the film. I am glad that the movie will spread awareness and will help people who are victims of such incidents to come out of it. They will get inspired that if she can do it than why not us.”
