The ruling Congress on Thursday notched early gains in the Nanded-Waghala City Municipal Corporation (NWCMC) polls in Maharashtra, leading in at least 66 out of the 81 seats.

The main rival, Bharatiya Janata Party trailed far behind with leads in just 5 seat. Shiv Sena is leading on one seat, and AIMIM is trailing on all seats.

The counting of votes is underway for the Nanded Municipal Corporation polls which was held on Wednesday.

The Congress, which currently hold the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC), seeks to retain the civic body while the BJP has gone all out to wrest control. Early reports suggest that the Congress is leading in the polls.

The polling had recorded a turnout of 60 per cent.

Nanded is the home-turf of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who led the Congress’ election campaign while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spearheaded the BJP's poll strategy.

There are 81 seats across 20 civic wards of the NWMC. Nineteen wards are represented by four members each, while one ward has five representatives.

The Congress, with 41 members, controls the outgoing civic body.

The corporation has 3.96 lakh registered voters. There are 578 candidates in the fray.
