Know Conrad Sangma, next Chief Minister of Meghalaya

Currently serving as an MP from Meghalaya’s Tura, Sangma started his political career in 2008 when he was elected to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Conrad Sangma, who is the president of National People's Party, is all set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on March 6. Pushing aside Congress and the fact that it emerged as the single largest party in the state, Sangma is being credited for an impressive show in the recently concluded polls.

Currently serving as an MP from Meghalaya’s Tura, Sangma started his political career in 2008 when he was elected to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Later, he was even inducted as the cabinet minister for finance, power and tourism in the state government. 

Elected to lead the opposition benches in 2009, Sangma continued as the Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly till 2013. 

Sangma is the son of former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, P. A. Sangma, who passed away after cardiac arrest on March 4, 2016. He was awarded a posthumous Padma Vibhushan in 2017 becoming the first recipient of the honour from Meghalaya. 

After the demise of his father, Conrad Sangma was elected as the Member of Parliament from family's traditional constituency of Tura.

His sister, Agatha was a member of the 15th Lok Sabha and a former Union Cabinet minister Minister of State, while his brother James Sangma is the Opposition Chief Whip in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. 

Conrad Sangma is a part of PA Sangma Foundation, which is associated with Education and Environment sector. It also runs four colleges in rural areas of Meghalaya. Apart from this, Conrad is also serving as President, Meghalaya Cricket Association, Sports Academy and PA Sangma Foundation.
