Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday said his government has taken strict measures to ensure cow protection but does not support people who indulge in violence in the name of 'gauraksha'.

"We do not support those who commit violence in the name of 'gauraksha'. Action will be taken against those responsible," Rupani said at India TV's mega conclave ‘Chunav Manch’ in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

"At the same time, the government is ensuring protection of cows for which we have a law, which is the strictest in the country. It also has the provision for life sentence," Rupani said.

Speaking to India TV Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma, Rupani said the state government has taken immediate action in all alleged cases of atrocities against Dalits.

"Cases are filed immediately and immediate action is taken. It is our responsibility to protect Dalits... We are ensuring safety and welfare of Dalits in Gujarat. That is why they support the BJP."

"It is our responsibility to provide protection to all sections of society. Be it Dalits or any other community, we pledge to protect all and provide them with their basic rights,” the Chief Minister said.
